Huge fire operation in Floridsdorf: recycling company in flames!
The Vienna fire department had its hands full today: A fire broke out in a paper recycling company in Floridsdorf in the afternoon, which quickly became a major event. At around 5 p.m., a huge cloud of smoke appeared that rose over the city and was also visible in the surrounding districts. This was reported by 5min, which reported on a large-scale operation involving hundreds of firefighters and alert level 3.
The flames blazed on the site in Steinheilgasse, and the emergency services had to set up several extinguishing lines and water cannons to bring the fire under control. According to information from aktuell.at, a total of 25 vehicles and around 100 firefighters were deployed to contain the fire and prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings.
Evacuation and traffic restrictions
To support the extinguishing work, train traffic between Floridsdorf and Leopoldau also had to be stopped for several hours. This meant that ÖBB had to redirect passengers to the Vienna lines, which recognized ÖBB tickets. Fire department spokesman Lukas Schauer also made it clear that the burning paper had to be cut up on site in order to extinguish it more effectively. The follow-up work and checks continued until late in the evening, as can be seen in the reports.
Fortunately, there are currently no injuries reported. However, the exact cause of the fire remains unclear. This is of great importance not only for the emergency services, but also for the operators of the recycling company, as such incidents raise questions about safety. As fire statistics show, fires in recycling plants are not common, but they are not unusual either. According to a comprehensive report on fire statistics, numerous fires have been recorded in recent years that have created similar operational scenarios.
For the residents in Floridsdorf and the affected passengers, we now have to wait and hope that the fire department quickly gets the situation under control. It remains to be hoped that this incident does not lead to serious consequences and that the cause of the fire can be clarified soon.
We will keep you updated on further developments.
