New children's cultural center in Floridsdorf: opening only in 2028!
Vienna, July 24, 2025 - In Floridsdorf, one of the liveliest and youngest districts in Vienna, there is news that is likely to cause excitement among both children and their parents. A new center for children's culture is to be built, but the opening will now be postponed until autumn 2028. The city of Vienna has officially announced this Puls24 reports.
The project, which is being realized in a former office building at Floridsdorf train station, was originally scheduled to start in spring 2027. Instead, the start of construction will now be postponed to spring 2026. The reason for the delay is changed infrastructural conditions, which are influenced by extensive modernization measures by ÖBB and Wiener Linien. These measures ensured that construction site logistics were severely affected, as the right Nordbahngasse was used for rail replacement traffic during the summer months of 2025 to 2027.
A place for cultural experiences
A multifunctional center is planned that covers around 3,500 square meters on five levels and will house the ZOOM Children's Museum and a new children's literature house. OTS emphasizes that the building rights holder ARWAG works closely with Kultur Raum Wien GmbH. The well-known architectural firm Kuehn Malvezzi, which has already implemented numerous culture and museum-oriented projects, will design the renovation according to its design plans. With ecological building materials and energy-efficient building technology, savings of around 600 tons of CO₂ are expected to be achieved.
The aim of the center will be to give children and young people playful access to art, literature and science. There is a strong focus on multilingualism and inclusion in order to create a space that does justice to the diverse cultural backgrounds of young visitors. Numerous participatory offers and events are also planned.
A center for the future
Once the work is completed, the new cultural center will become a place for encounters, motivation and inspiration for children and young people. It should not only expand Vienna's cultural landscape, but also represent an important meeting point for interactive offers. The Vienna City Hall emphasizes that the plans aim to create more places for cultural experiences and encounters - a matter of the heart in a city that is currently exceeding the two million population mark.
While the postponement of the project leaves future visitors disappointed, the promise of a unique, modern and child-friendly center gives hope that the wait will be worth it. In the meantime, it remains to be seen what the logistical challenges of the infrastructure measures will be. With a bit of luck, Floridsdorf's children will soon be able to call a place their own that stimulates the imagination and promotes learning in a playful way.
