Mitja Mörec: Successful coach moves from FAC to Blau-Weiß Linz!

The Floridsdorfer Athletic Sports Club (FAC) and its long-time head coach Mitja Mörec are now going their separate ways. After more than four successful years with Floridsdorf, the 42-year-old has decided to take on a new challenge and will in future hold the reins at Bundesliga club FC Blau-Weiß Linz. The change was necessary because his predecessor, Gerald Scheiblehner, moved to Grasshoppers Zurich, which puts the new coaching candidate in a position to continue Scheiblehner's good record.

Mörec, who was in office for 1,541 days and supervised 137 competitive games, showed impressive performances at FAC. Under his leadership, the team achieved runner-up status in the 2nd league and was able to place well in the top third of the table with a points average of 1.67. Last season, FAC finished in a solid sixth place, confirming the club's positive development since being promoted again. “For us, this was the most successful coach since then,” emphasizes Lukas Fischer, FAC Sports Director, and is grateful for Mörec’s work. This is also reflected in the perspective of Stefan Krainz, Managing Director for Economic Affairs, who praises Mörec as an “outstanding trainer and person”.

New chapter in Linz

An exciting task awaits Mörec in Linz. With a contract until 2027, he wants to continue the positive development at Blau-Weiß Linz. The club achieved the best finish in its history last season with sixth place and would like to continue this trend. Sports director Christoph Schösswendter highlights Mörec's combination of human and sporting qualities, which he considers indispensable for the challenges ahead.

Mörec's move comes at a time when coaching changes are not uncommon in the Bundesliga. According to current data, numerous coaching changes have been registered since the 1963/1964 season, which shows how dynamic the coaching carousel is in the league. Mörec is not the first to leave his mark on Austrian football, but his CV at FAC is seen as a shining example of successful coaching work in the 2nd division.

Interim solution at FAC

Until Mörec's successor at the FAC is determined, assistant coach Mario Sonnleitner will take over the training management on an interim basis. This will be crucial to ensure a smooth transition, especially with the league's impending start scheduled for August 3, 2025.

Mörec's move to FC Blau-Weiß Linz closes an exciting chapter and it remains to be seen how the new constellation will affect the club's performance in the coming season. It will be important for the FAC to maintain the usual quality on the pitch and to continue the successes achieved so far.

Who knows? Maybe the change of coach will bring a breath of fresh air and a little luck for everyone involved. In any case, the fans' football hearts continue to beat strongly in Floridsdorf and Linz.
