Large project in Vienna: S-Bahn between Floridsdorf and Praterstern closed!
From June 28, 2025, it will be good in Vienna, because ÖBB starts a comprehensive modernization project. From 2 a.m. to September 1st, the S-Bahn line between Floridsdorf and Praterstern is completely closed. This area is of great importance not only for commuters, but also for leisure traffic, which means that the upcoming weeks will have a high impact on mobility in the north of the city. After all, the Wien Floridsdorf route connects with the urban infrastructure and plays a central role for many who are traveling to the capital every day.
In order to minimize the effects of the lock, two replacement bus lines are set up. The yellow line offers a direct bus between Praterstern and Floridsdorf without intermediate stops and runs Monday to Friday from 5:30 a.m. and on weekends from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The blue line , on the other hand, will serve the Handelskai and Traisengasse stops as a replacement of rails. Both lines are offered in specially branded buses with clear lines, which facilitates orientation for passengers.

In addition to the S-Bahn, the U4 between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke will also be brought to shape from June 28 to September 1st. The U4 tunnel infrastructure is over 120 years old and urgently needs a renewal. The U4 between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke as well as Hütteldorf and Schottenring will continue to be operated during the work. There are switching options over the tram lines E4 and D that drive to the Schottenring.
A look into the future
Modernization should not only improve the current state, but also bring long -term advantages. The “S-Bahn Vienna Upgrade” program runs until the end of 2027 and aims to optimize public transport between Vienna and Lower Austria. The aim is to make the main course for the future and to bring more commuters to the federal capital quickly and comfortably. The route between Vienna Meidling and Floridsdorf has been considered a backbone of public rail transport for more than 60 years and these investments are a clear sign that Vienna will continue to be a do-it-yourself for commuters in the future.
