Attention crime scene fans: New investigative team brings a breath of fresh air!

The time has come: After a three-month summer break, the “Tatort” will celebrate its comeback on September 14, 2025. With the new episode “I see you”, which takes place in Franconia, the popular investigator Felix Voss also returns. In this episode, the talented Mavie Hörbiger will play a blind woman in an episode role. The tension is inevitable!

But that's not all: from the next episode, Rosalie Thomass will enrich the investigative landscape as Chief Detective Emilia Rathgeber. There is also a breath of fresh air in Frankfurt: A new team, consisting of Hamza Kulina (Edin Hasanović) and Maryam Azadi (Melika Foroutan), will be introduced to the “Department for Old Cases” on October 5th. The two are investigating a cold case, which is considered a novelty in the history of the “crime scene”. The duo's first case will be titled "Darkness" and will revolve around a years-long unsolved murder in which human remains are discovered.

New wind and farewell

The changes within the format are numerous. Just a few weeks after the introduction of the new Frankfurt team, the last cases with Adele Neuhauser and Harald Krassnitzer will be filmed in Vienna before they leave the series in 2026. Recently, rumors about possible successors have been making the rounds. A young team of authors could bring a breath of fresh air to the familiar investigation. Meanwhile, fans will have to prepare for the penultimate case featuring Krassnitzer and Neuhauser, “The Electrician,” which airs on December 14th.

The farewell seems bittersweet because the series' loyal viewers have always taken the dynamic investigative teams to their hearts. So this year we have the tenth case of the duo Grandjean and Ott in Zurich with the title “ventricular fibrillation” as well as Leonie Winkler, who is investigating in Dresden on October 12th, before we finally have to say goodbye to some beloved characters. Prosecutor Klemm, played by Mechthild Großmann, will also be leaving the series in December.

Crime scene and reality

And while “Tatort” fans follow the new stories and the usual adventure on the screen, an analysis by the editorial network Germany shows that the violence depicted in “Tatort” differs from the real world. The probability of becoming a victim of a violent act in Germany decreased from 1994 to 2018, while the number of TV deaths in the series increased. This can be seen, for example, in the episode “In the Promised Land”, which set a record with 26 deaths. A majority of the murderers in the series are still male and the victims are 75 percent men.

The living conditions can be seen not only in crime dramas on television. The geographical distribution of the Mtot is partly identical to the real numbers. In Dortmund, for example, there are more film corpses than real deaths, while in Münster, “Tatort” viewers are confronted with 22 TV deaths, even though the real numbers are much lower.

The coming weeks and months promise many exciting developments in the “Tatort” universe. On October 5th, viewers can look forward to the first investigations by Hamza Kulina and Maryam Azadi in the new Frankfurt investigation team - perhaps a new era for the traditional series!
