Musical fireworks: Paula Barembuem honors Mercedes Sosa in Munich!

A very special musical encounter takes place between Christian Bakanic's Trio Infernal and the singer Paula Barembuem. The two artists have teamed up to present an innovative program that combines various musical influences. Barembuem, originally from Buenos Aires, has settled in Vienna and brings an intimate familiarity with tango to the collaboration. This is complemented by the trio's complex compositions, which are inspired by, among others, Astor Piazzolla. This fusion of jazz, contemporary club grooves and traditional tango makes the result an exciting experience for the listeners. MeinBezirk.at reports that the Trio Infernal sees itself as an ambassador between these musical worlds, while Paula Barembuem describes herself as a bridge builder.

The collective came together through mutual fascination and curiosity about their respective styles. They have released the album “Sueñera” and have already given concerts in renowned locations such as the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Helmut-List-Halle. But that's not all: Inspired by their collaboration, they have launched a new project that aims to present a musical portrait of the legendary singer Mercedes Sosa.

A portrait of Mercedes Sosa

Mercedes Sosa, known as “The Voice of the Voiceless,” was a central figure in the “nueva canción” movement and used her music to elevate the voices of oppressed people during Argentina’s military dictatorships. Her songs deal with themes such as courage, injustice, freedom, love and hope - all essential messages that should resonate in the desired portrait. On December 14, 2023, this project will be performed under the title “The Voice of the Voiceless: a musical portrait of Mercedes Sosa” in the Silbersaal in Munich, according to Deutsches-Theater.de.

The program promises an exciting experience with a varied cast: In addition to Paula Barembuem on vocals, Christian Bakanic (accordion, keyboard, percussion), Christian Wendt (bass) and Jörg Haberl (drums) are part of the ensemble. The event takes place in the cabaret, which is known for its cultural diversity and regularly offers concerts and other cultural events.

A look at the musical roots

The tribute to Mercedes Sosa is reflected in the values anchored in Argentine music. Songs like “Gracias a la Vida” and “Alfonsina y el Mar” are part of her heritage and are an expression of the longing for freedom and the preservation of cultural identity. The cultural influences of tango, which are characterized by European and African roots, further strengthen their musical narrative, which Astor Piazzolla also continued with his innovative approach to tango. These musical elements now combine in the work with Barembuem and the Trio Infernal and show how deeply rooted the Argentinian culture is in their music.

Tickets for the concert are available both online and by telephone. Prices are 30 euros at the box office, with reduced offers for members and students. Anyone who would like to experience the performance in December is guaranteed a place in one of the most beautiful cultural locations in Munich. It is an occasion that celebrates not only musical diversity, but also the stories and struggles of the voices that need to be heard.
