Meidling goes digital: Reform for more transparency in politics!
There is a remarkable change in the district council in Meidling. SPÖ and NEOS have launched a reform that is intended to increase transparency in district work. This initiative includes not only digital accessibility and livestreams, but also the introduction of a media library for meeting minutes and inquiries. District leader Wilfried Zankl (SPÖ) emphasizes the importance of traceability in political work. Minutes and voting results are currently on the website meidling.wien.at provided.
Citizens have something to look forward to, because the public meetings have been broadcast as a live stream since 2018, and the media library is expected to start in December. In the future, this platform will offer the possibility of permanently accessing sessions. MA 53 – Communication and Media is responsible for the development of this media library. The district council will also work on improving accessibility and, for example, provide sign language interpreters.
Digitalization in district work
Digitalization runs like a common thread through the reform. “More efficient and modern information provision for citizens” is the aim, and not without reason: The reform initiated by NEOS Vienna aims to make all 23 district councils more digital. This strengthens the controlling function of the district parliaments and simplifies access to political information. From now on, citizens can access various documents such as meeting minutes and inquiries digitally - a step that makes administration more up-to-date. The live stream of district council meetings will also be anchored in law, which should further increase transparency.
Another highlight is the new regulation that requests to the district management must be answered within two months. Written objections can be conveniently submitted by email. The reaction to new agenda items is also more agile: meetings are interrupted to deal with current business items. In addition, applications can be submitted by citizens with ID Austria in the future. This reform is intended not only to increase control, but also to promote the involvement of the population in political decision-making processes.
A step into the future
The reform, which was approved by the local council in April and has been in force since September 1, 2025, relies on modern digital solutions and the automation of routine tasks. Both technical and organizational changes must be taken into account in long-term planning. Digitalization enables the administration to act more transparently and closer to the citizens while not losing sight of IT security. The trend towards digitalization shows that changes are also necessary in public administration in order to meet the demands of the time, they say Bundesdruckerei.
In summary, it can be said that the reform in Meidling is not only a step forward for political culture, but also reflects a clear trend in digital design administration. This initiative lays an important foundation to give citizens easier and more transparent access to district work.
