Line 5: Important changes and track renewals from September 15th!

In Vienna's Josefstadt, things are still going strong after the summer: Line 5 will be shortened until Wednesday, October 1st. From Monday, September 15th, from 4 a.m., the tram will only run between Praterstern and the Josefstädter Straße subway station. The stops in the Mariahilf and Neubau districts have to be temporarily replaced as track replacements are being carried out between Blindengasse and Mariahilfer Straße. Six stations will remain unused for two weeks, which requires a lot of patience from passengers.

Wiener Linien advises all users to allow enough time for their journeys in order to avoid the resulting inconveniences. For those who want to change to the subway, you can switch to the U6 at Josefstädter Straße. In order to communicate the ongoing modernizations efficiently, a current overview of all construction sites and restrictions can be found on the Wiener Linien website, which is updated regularly wienerlinien.at.

Major modernization offensive for Vienna's public transport system

The conversion of line 5 is part of a comprehensive modernization offensive called “Network even more”. Wiener Linien will invest 223 million euros in the renewal of the infrastructure next year in order to make the public transport network more efficient. A total of around 100 construction sites are being planned, most of which will be carried out either at night or at less busy times in order to avoid disrupting ongoing operations as much as possible wien.gv.at.

As part of this offensive, many tracks and switches will also be improved over the next two years - specifically, almost 20 kilometers of track and 100 switches will be renovated. The most important locations include Kreuzgasse, Wiedner Hauptstraße and Universitätsstraße/Landesgerichtsstraße. These major renovations are not only necessary to ensure the safety and reliability of public transport, they also help create pedestrian and cyclist friendly environments. For example, Wiedner Hauptstraße is being redesigned to include more green spaces and cycle paths.

Wiener Linien emphasize that such large-scale construction sites also have advantages for residents: a large construction site is only set up nearby once, which in the long term increases the quality of living in the affected areas. Although the short-term restrictions are annoying, the improvements are worth it in the long run as they enhance the infrastructure for decades to come.

The 6th largest tram network in the world continues to be modernized, and Wiener Linien remains on the ball to find the best possible solutions for passengers and residents. This continuous modernization is essential so that Vienna remains one of the most attractive cities for public transport in the future and the city has a good hand.
