Loud music in Vienna's subway: trend annoys passengers!
There currently seems to be a new trend in Vienna's public transport that is stirring up people's minds. Loud MyDistrict is played loudly in subways and trams, causing both joy and annoyance among passengers. Inspired by a similar phenomenon, the "Sigma Boy" trend, where the song "Sigma Boy" is played on public transport, this new development is quickly making the rounds. These actions are filmed via social platforms such as TikTok and Instagram and enjoy a high number of views and likes.
A recent example involves an older man performing the song “Vamos a La Playa” by Loona on a subway. The reactions of the passengers are consistently mixed: while some are visibly annoyed, others clap along enthusiastically. However, Wiener Linien has already responded and emphasized that playing loud music violates the conditions of carriage and house rules. According to these regulations, playing music on public transport is generally not permitted.
Rules and consequences
Since 2017, Wiener Linien has set up special places for musicians at various subway stations. These spaces are intended to create a positive atmosphere and encourage the exchange of talent without distracting or inconveniencing passengers. A total of 330 security and service employees monitor compliance with these rules around the clock. Passengers are regularly reminded that playing loud music on public transport is undesirable.
The plan to allow a musical note on public transport could also be seen as part of the larger trend towards a more pleasant and creativity-promoting cityscape. In other cities, such as Madrid, there are similar developments where citizens promote cultural events and artistic performances in public spaces. Creative approaches can help improve the quality of life in cities, but they need to be carefully managed to take into account what is comfortable for the majority of users.
A look at digital trends
Whether it's the music in the subway or digital trends, the interaction of these elements shows how important it is to design public space in accordance with the wishes of its users. It remains to be seen how the musical trend in Vienna's means of transport will develop and to what extent it can further influence the cityscape.
