Green awakening in Vienna: Prack takes over as club chairman!

On Monday, June 2, 2025, the Green Club in Vienna set up a new team in the town hall. Alexander Prack was elected as the new club chairman, while Judith Pühringer and Peter Kraus were confirmed as city councilors with a clear majority. Prack, who has been active in the Green Movement for several years, is taking over the leadership from David Ellensohn, who was recognized for his many years of professional work.

Prack, who is 41 years old and comes from Steyr, brings a lot of experience with him. He has been a member of the state parliament and municipal council in Vienna since 2020. He was previously a district councilor in the 10th district from 2008 to 2015 and has been a member of the Green Party since 2003. “We want to make the Greens the leading opposition party in terms of content,” explained Prack in his first statement. “We don’t see ourselves as opponents, but rather as constructive counterparts to the new city government,” he added.

Focus on important topics

Judith Pühringer will focus on the topics of the labor market and people with disabilities. Peter Kraus, on the other hand, will act as an expert on climate protection and queer politics. Both city councilors have already emphasized that they are committed to working in their new roles and would like to thank Ellensohn for his tireless commitment.

The new team has clear goals: The Greens want to exert pressure for necessary changes in Vienna, especially in the areas of affordable housing, education and climate protection. “We advocate a consistent and constructive opposition policy,” said Julia Malle, who will act as deputy club chairwoman.

The extended team

In addition to Prack, Pühringer and Kraus, the Green Town Hall Club includes other committed members:

  • Jennifer Kickert
  • Hans Arsenovic (Wirtschaftssprecher)
  • Berîvan Aslan (Menschenrechtssprecher)
  • Niki Kunrath (Familien- und Kultursprecherin)
  • Ursula Berner (Umweltsprecherin)
  • Huem Otero García (Gesundheits- und Pflegesprecherin)
  • Barbara Huemer (Budgetsprecher)
  • Martin Margulies (Mobilitäts- und Planungssprecher)
  • Heidi Sequenz
  • Kilian Stark (Bildungssprecher)
  • Felix Stadler
  • Viktoria Spielmann (Sozial- und Frauensprecherin)

With this broad range of expertise and a clear focus on constructive opposition work, the Green Party is moving optimistically into the next political phase. “We will fight for the important issues facing our city and ensure that the Greens’ voice is heard loud and clear,” the new leaders emphasize.
