Favoritner Climate Protection Festival inspires with creative hands-on stations!
On June 5th, the first climate protection festival of the initiative of the same name took place at Reumannplatz in Favoriten. This event, which is scheduled to take place every two years, is all about climate protection and is organized by schools in the 10th district. The event is supported by Volkshilfe Community Work as well as by the children's friends and the district administration. District leader Markus Franz (SPÖ) deliberately chose this central location to offer citizens practical tips on how they can act more environmentally consciously in everyday life.
Over 20 interactive stations invited visitors to participate and think. The participating schools, including Fachmittelschule 10 and BG/BRG Pichelmayergasse, designed a diverse program. Those interested could, among other things, discover second-hand fashion or find out how to repair a bicycle. There was also information about gardening in the district and the options for checking electrical devices. In this regard, the event worked closely with organizations such as Global 2000 and Grätzllabor Favoriten. The clear message of the festival was: “Climate protection begins in the Grätzl”.
Creative hands-on stations
People had the opportunity to build garbage sculptures, work with climate time machines or take part in games about future jobs. The solar cooking boxes and the textile screen printing were just as interesting. These actions not only stimulate thought, but also show in a creative way how environmental protection can be integrated into everyday life. The results of these creative actions were eagerly presented by the students and citizens.
A highlight of the festival was the Climate Protection Prize, which has been awarded annually since 2019. In the future, this prize will be presented in conjunction with the climate protection festival. The winners of the last award ceremony, Fachmittelschule 10, offered guests a “climate menu” that familiarized visitors with environmentally conscious nutrition.
Global responsibility – a look outside the box
In the context of climate protection, World Environment Day, which has been celebrated since 1972, should not go unmentioned. This year the motto is: “Stop plastic waste – recycle instead of throwing it away”. On this day, numerous events took place throughout Vienna, including a live talk by Caritas at Stephansplatz. There, key players discussed the importance of second-hand and sustainable consumption, while visitors were able to benefit from discounts during exclusive late-night shopping.
In view of the current challenges, the commitment to a functioning circular economy is even more important. According to a report by the Federal Environment Agency, which examines the climate protection potential of the circular economy, municipal waste management in the EU could make a significant contribution to climate protection. The reports emphasize that greenhouse gas emissions can be significantly reduced through technical and systemic optimization. This is not just about avoiding waste, but also about using existing resources to reduce emissions.
In summary, it can be said that the Favoritn Climate Protection Festival was not only an important step towards greater awareness of climate protection, but also offered a platform that promoted the exchange of sustainable practices. The festival impressively shows how important it is to work together for a better future - even in small neighborhoods.
