Petrol hybrids are overtaking petrol engines: Austria's car registrations are booming!
In Austria, the market for new registrations in the automotive industry is booming. Compared to the same month last year, new registrations of passenger cars rose by a remarkable 9% in July 2025. From January to July, a total of 167,918 vehicles were newly registered, which corresponds to an increase of 13,904 cars compared to the same period last year meinkreis.at reported.
It was time to cut back on conventionally operated vehicles: these fell by 17.5% to 68,010 new registrations. The share of conventional vehicles is therefore 40.5%. Particularly significant declines were recorded for diesel cars, with a decrease of 30.2% to 20,733 new registrations, while gasoline-powered cars were also not in trend with 47,277 new registrations (-10.4%).
Alternatives on the rise
However, the future seems to clearly belong to alternative drives. These are experiencing a real surge: the number of alternative drives rose by 39.6% and reached 99,908 new registrations, which corresponds to a share of 59.5%. Gasoline hybrids with 54,349 new registrations (+44.0%) and electric cars with 36,454 new registrations (+45.2%) were particularly popular.
- Benzin-Hybride: 54.349 Neuzulassungen (+44,0%)
- Diesel-Hybride: 9.103 Neuzulassungen (+4,9%)
- Elektro-PKW: 36.454 Neuzulassungen (+45,2%)
The proportion of new electric vehicles is growing noticeably: in the first four months of 2025 alone, 246,633 vehicles with electric drives were newly registered in Germany. This represents a growth of 44.1% compared to 2024, as kba.de reported.
Who is buying? A look at the buyer structure
An interesting aspect is the distribution of new registrations between legal entities and private vehicle owners. Companies and local authorities accounted for around 63.7% of new registrations, while private buyers accounted for 36.3%. When it comes to electric cars, it can be seen that 29.5% of new registrations came from private individuals, while for petrol cars this proportion was 43.7%.
These new trends come as no surprise. Access to cheaper electric cars and previous tax benefits, which are no longer available as of April 1, 2023, have had a major impact on the market. In the first half of 2023, there was an overall decline of 33.8% in diesel cars and a 12.6% decline in gasoline cars, underscoring the interest in alternative powertrains, such as orf.at highlighted in his reports.
All of these developments show that the automotive industry in Austria and Germany is undergoing exciting change. New registrations of cars, especially with alternative drives, are picking up speed and could be future-oriented for the domestic and international automotive industry.
