Farewell to the cult duo: Who follows Krassnitzer and Neuhauser in the crime scene?

In an era full of exciting crime stories and gripping investigations, a chapter of the Austrian “Tatort” is coming to an end. Harald Krassnitzer and Adele Neuhauser, two of the most famous faces in the crime series, say goodbye to the audience after more than two decades. Their last case together will be broadcast at the end of 2026, but until then the two commissioners will remain active until the final filming.

Krassnitzer, who has been searching for clues as Inspector Moritz Eisner since 1999 and has thrilled viewers in 59 cases, is supported by Neuhauser, who acted as Inspector Bibi Fellner in 34 joint cases. Their exit comes as no surprise as both actors are looking for new challenges. ORF program director Stefanie Groiss-Horowitz praised the duo's harmonious interaction, which has developed over the years. Two films, “We Can’t Be Believed!” and “The Electrician,” are scheduled to hit theaters in 2025, and two more projects are also already planned for 2026 to fill the gap left by the duo.

The Succession – A Race of Talents

In the shadow of the farewell, there are already initial speculations about the successor to the two stars. Thomas Schubert and Laurence Rupp are considered the main candidates. The 31-year-old Schubert made a name for himself through his role in the drama “Atmen” and is valued as an intense character actor. Laurence Rupp, 37 years old, is at home on the stages of the Burgtheater as well as in television series such as “Vorstadtweiber” and in the film “Cops”. But no official decision has yet been made about the future line-up. The realignment could bring about personnel and conceptual changes - will it remain a duo or will the Viennese “Tatort” come up with new formats in the future?

The crime series has not only thrilled a wide audience in Austria, but also internationally. The latest Austro “crime scene” “Messer” recently managed an impressive 8.44 million viewers and a market share of 32 percent, and the market share among the younger target group of 12 to 49 years old was also 21 percent – proof of how popular the “crime scene” still is.

A look at the crime statistics

With the change in the cast of the “crime scene”, it will also be interesting to see how the newly elected commissioners react to the challenges that today brings with it. The “crime scene” therefore remains not just a television format, but a reflection of society that is constantly changing.
