Find out everything about the Viennese pilot project "Mobil Hüpfer" in Donaustadt, which expires at the end of 2023 and improves local transport services.

Future of the Wien Mobil Hüpfer: Over for Liesing - What happens now?

In Vienna, the “Vienna Mobil Hüpfer”, a practical range of mobility from the Viennese lines, will be discontinued after October 31, 2023. The pilot project, which had been active in the Liesing district since 2022, could not prevail despite its positive approaches. The passengers had the option of booking a wheelchair-accessible e-tone bus from various stops in the district via an app. This service was primarily used as an environmentally friendly alternative to get to the subway or simply for everyday trips, be it for shopping or school.

Again courier reports, however, the "hopper" was discontinued due to the low utilization. With an average of around two passengers per hour, the Viennese lines saw the additional benefits of the on-demand offer as too low. District head Gerald Bischof (SPÖ) expressed his regret about this step and regretted the attitude.

Reasons for discontinuation

During the evaluation of the project, it emerged that previous improvements in regular scheduled services - including the new lines 61B and 64B as well as a reorganization of lines 61A and 64A - were the main reason for the low demand for the hop service. All of these lines use electric buses, which contribute to environmentally friendly mobility in the city.

In the Danube city, however, where a hopping service has also been available since 2023, the service is being intensified. The settlement structure and the route network there differ significantly from those in Liesing, which suggests a greater need for an on-demand service.

Public transport in Vienna

Public transport in Vienna is well developed and offers a variety of options. The city is well served by public transport via a network of subway, S-Bahn, buses and trams. One of the best offers are the City Passes, which not only offer reduced or free entry prices to attractions, but also allow unlimited travel on public transport.

Information about the transport offerings and ticket options is available on the Vienna Tourist Information You can find the website where, in addition to tariffs, the various ticket types - from single trips to day tickets - are listed. A day ticket for €8.00 is worth it from the third single trip and allows unlimited trips within one day.

The Wiener Linien plays a central role in the city with its mobility offering for both locals and travelers. In Vienna, the public remains curious to see how developments in transport will develop in the future and what new ideas will emerge from the evaluation of the Hüpfer project.
