Ulm celebrates diversity: The rainbow tram is now here!
As part of Pride Month in June, the Donau-Iller-Nahverkehrsverbund-GmbH (DING) together with SWU Verkehr GmbH set an impressive example of openness and diversity. On June 2, 2025, the new DING rainbow tram was officially put into operation. This 31.5 meter long tram, which offers space for 185 passengers, impresses not only with its design in the six rainbow colors, but also with its motto: “Togetherness has priority”.
The tram will be used on both lines in Ulm until at least the end of 2026. At the opening ceremony, DING managing director Bastian Goßner emphasized the enormous importance of acceptance and inclusion in public transport, which applies to all people, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, impairment, origin or social background. The managing director of the SWU, Ralf Gummersbach, also highlighted the diversity of the employees in local transport, who come from different countries and actively participate in shaping customer service.
Pride Ulm/Neu-Ulm in the spotlight
Another highlight of the partnership is the support of DING as a sponsor of the Christopher Street Day 2025. The Pride Ulm/Neu-Ulm association, which promotes visibility, education and equality in the region, benefits from this collaboration. If you would like to find out more about the association's activities, you can do so on the Pride Ulm website.
Pride Month itself is all about diversity, tolerance and inclusion. Every day, transport companies work to ensure that millions of passengers from different cultural backgrounds experience a pleasant journey. The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) takes a clear position against racism and discrimination and sees diversity as an enrichment for the industry and society.
Commitment to a colorful future
In June, the rainbow flag is raised as a symbol of sexual diversity. The overall goal is to promote respect and tolerance and recognize individual identities. In addition, the #öffisbunt association, which was founded in January 2025, is another important player. He advocates for the visibility and appreciation of the LGBTIQA community in public transport. The VDV is not only a non-material but also a financial supporter of this association.
The DING rainbow tram campaign is part of a larger commitment by transport companies to ensure that every passenger and every employee feels welcome in this colorful society. The numerous member companies that have signed the “Charter of Diversity” are sending a clear message against discrimination.
