Fast-paced chase: Drivers without a license arrested!

A wild chase scenario took place in Leopoldstadt, which not only excited the police, but also kept the residents on tenterhooks. On the night of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, a 28-year-old driver made a risky escape through the city and caused traffic chaos.

The action-packed chase began after the driver violated a driving ban. He even disrupted the operation of an ambulance that urgently needed help. Despite repeated requests from the police to stop the vehicle, the man accelerated. In the local area he reached speeds of over 110 km/h and then raced along the motorway at more than 170 km/h. It became particularly dangerous when he was traveling at over 80 km/h in a 30 zone and forced other road users to slow down.

The dangerous journey took a dramatic turn when the driver attempted to steer towards a patrol car whose crew had to take evasive action. The perpetrator finally left the car at Kagraner Platz and continued his escape on foot, while his 32-year-old passenger remained in the vehicle. Despite several shots fired by the police in an attempt to stop him, the fugitive could not be stopped and was ultimately arrested in the bushes.

Legal consequences

During the arrest, officers found small amounts of cocaine and cannabis. The medical officer also confirmed that he was impaired by drugs and had an alcohol level of 0.6 per mille. But that wasn't all: the driver didn't have a valid driving license and outstanding fines in the four-digit range. He was taken into custody and is now facing charges of attempted resistance to state authority, attempted grievous bodily harm and other offenses under traffic law and the Narcotic Substances Act. The case illustrates the serious consequences of escaping a traffic situation, which in Austria is known as a “hit-and-run”. This is defined as unauthorized removal from the scene of an accident and entails significant penalties, such as fines and points in Flensburg, as well as possibly the loss of your driving license.

In most cases, the penalty for a hit-and-run is up to three years in prison, especially if people are harmed. The legal obligations after an accident are clearly regulated: Drivers must stay at the scene of the accident, leave their personal details and, if necessary, inform the police. If an accident occurs, it is advisable to secure evidence and seek legal advice as quickly as possible.

A look at the statistics

The challenges that drivers face in traffic accidents and resulting escapes are diverse. The statistics from fine money experts show that consequences can arise not only for minor damage. Hit and run is often viewed as a violation that complicates the investigation of responsible parties and hinders the settlement of damages. Dealing with the situation sensitively and in a timely manner is crucial to avoid further legal problems.

The high-speed chase in Leopoldstadt not only showed the perpetrator's potential, but also the dangers associated with irresponsible behavior in traffic. In a city like Vienna, where road safety is a top priority, such incidents are particularly worrying. One can only hope that the seriousness of the consequences serves as a lesson to one or another road user.
