Political chaos in the Danube city: ÖVP in a power struggle and accusations!
There is a huge political simmer in the city on the Danube. The ÖVP is faced with deep resentment, while the SPÖ once again recorded strong results in the last elections. An exciting dynamic is emerging in the local political landscape, which is characterized by a power struggle within the ÖVP and rumors about questionable membership admissions.
The SPÖ triumphed in the 2024 National Council election and achieved 29.8 percent of the vote, an increase of 0.7 percentage points. Pretty impressive, with the FPÖ right on its heels with 27.86 percent – a huge increase of 10.85 percentage points. The ÖVP, on the other hand, had to accept a sharp decline of 8.99 percentage points from 17.2 percent and thus slipped from second to third place. This is a hard setback for the party, which is fighting for a basic mandate in the Danube city. Today reported that voter turnout was 68.07 percent, with a total of 135,104 eligible voters and 91,970 votes cast.
Power games in the ÖVP
The power struggle behind the scenes continues to escalate. The SPÖ's district leader, Ernst Nevrivy, is also facing legal challenges as he is on trial in the Wienwert case. At the center of the debate is the controversial district party leader Gudrun Kugler, whose position is being contested through secret emails from party colleagues. It is criticized that new members of the ÖAAB primarily serve to strengthen the career of local councilor Caroline Hungerländer. Despite the internal quarrels, the ÖVP put Kugler first on the list in order to secure the basic mandate, which further undermines trust in the party leadership.
Rumors say that Hannes Taborsky, as the mastermind behind the activities in the district, could also be responsible for manipulating membership numbers. These allegations have led to dissatisfaction being expressed about his role in the ÖAAB state organization. Laurenz Mayer, the managing director of the state party, is aware of the allegations, but is not taking any active action against the circumstances. Kugler describes the attacks on her person as a “smear campaign” and calls for clarification.
The political challenges in the run-up to the elections
The upcoming municipal and district council elections in Vienna on April 27, 2025 are already around the corner. Previous elections have shown how important it is for parties to organize themselves in a timely manner and position themselves strategically. Statista points out that the political landscape in Austria is constantly changing and more and more votes need to be won. Greater voter participation could be particularly crucial in the upcoming elections.
The opposition to starving countries is already forming in the background and is being seen as a potential successor to Kugler. Names like Michaela Löff and Martin Flicker are being discussed, which only increases the uncertainty within the ÖVP. Whether and how all these factors will affect the future of the Danube city remains to be seen. One thing is clear, however: the political arena in the Danube city remains exciting and full of surprises.
