Traffic jam chaos on the A23: construction work brings Vienna to a standstill!
In the federal capital Vienna, there will be noticeable traffic disruptions on the A23, the busiest road in Austria, in the coming days. The A23, which has around 230,000 vehicles a day, is affected due to urgently needed renovation work between the Prater junction and the Handelskai junction. Again ÖAMTC reported, two night construction sites are planned, which will extend over the coming weekends.
The first construction site will take place from November 7th at 10:00 p.m. to November 9th at 9:00 a.m. During this time, only one lane will be available in the direction of Graz. The following weekend, from November 14th at 10:00 p.m. to November 16th at 9:00 a.m., the A23 towards Kagran will also only be accessible with one lane. During the day, drivers can use two lanes, but long traffic jams and delays are to be expected - even on the alternative routes such as the Nordbrücke, the Belt and the Reichsbrücke.
Traffic jam forecasts and diversions
The traffic jam forecasts are anything but rosy. Alternative routes such as the Nordrand Expressway (S2), the Donauufer Autobahn (A22) or the connections via the Reichsbrücke and Lassallestrasse are also under pressure. The exit from the A23 to the Favoriten junction towards the south is also expected to be particularly burdened, as it will be temporarily restricted at night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. to allow for the construction of a retaining wall. At these times only one lane remains available on the main carriageway before all lanes are reopened during the day.
The renovations on the A23 are expected to be completed in December 2025. This is happening in the context of further construction work on the A4 between the Prater and Schwechat junction, where further disruptions due to paving work and bridge repairs are to be expected until September 2026.
Means of transport in transition
In view of the numerous vehicles and the volume of traffic in Germany, which has been documented in the standard work “Traffic in Numbers” for over 50 years, it is clear that infrastructural investments are essential. This publication, published by Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is published, offers comprehensive statistics on various aspects of mobility and transport and could also serve as a model for future developments in Austria.
While the road infrastructure is working at full speed, the Viennese can only hope that they have the patience behind the wheel of a car to face the construction sites with a smile. So for drivers the motto is: “Hold on!”
