Retirement home calls for a limit of 30: demo for more security!
Especially in a city like Vienna, where life is vibrant, the safety of the older population is a particular focus. The residents and employees of the Park Residence Döbling are actively campaigning for a speed reduction on Hartäckerstrasse. This approximately 300 meter long section poses a high risk for many seniors, as buses and cars often rush past, creating dangerous situations.
On Wednesday, September 24th, from 9 a.m., a demonstration will take place in front of the Park Residenz Döbling under the motto “30 km/h is enough - more safety for residents and employees of the Park Residenz Döbling”. The aim of this event is to get the city of Vienna and the Wiener Linien to recognize that reducing the speed to 30 km/h could increase the safety of all road users. District leader Daniel Resch (ÖVP) previously submitted an application for this speed limit, but it was rejected in February 2023. Resch will also be present at the rally to support the protesters' demands, such as OTS reported.
Burdens of the transport transition
The Wiener Linien fear that a speed reduction would result in longer travel times for the 40a bus route, which could affect the organization of public transport. This is one of the core arguments that puts a lot of strain on the dialogue between residents and the transport companies. However, the Park Residenz management points out that Hartäckerstrasse is relatively narrow anyway and buses cannot travel at high speeds. This fact could undermine the Wiener Linien's argument and should be taken into account in future discussions.
In order to better shed light on the safety aspect, it should be mentioned that measures are regularly taken to promote safety for senior citizens in Vienna. This is how the cooperation between the houses to live in and the Vienna police intensified. This initiative makes it possible to create a safe environment and promote the joy of life of the older population, while strengthening social cohesion. Peter Hacker, Executive City Councilor for Social Affairs, emphasizes the importance of dialogue between citizens, communities and security authorities.
Stand up for security together
The demonstrating residents and employees of Park Residenz Döbling not only show commitment to their immediate surroundings, but also contribute to a larger conversation about the safety of all seniors in Vienna. Regular information events, training and advisory services support these efforts. A radar that alerts drivers to their speed has already been installed in the area to raise awareness of the dangers.
Ultimately, it is the goal of all stakeholders that, after the demonstration, further measures are taken to improve road safety in this critical zone. Security must be a common concern that is promoted in urban society - because as the saying goes: “We are stronger together!”
