Vienna gets the Liar City: Sustainable mall for creative minds!

In Vienna, a lot is happening in Muthgasse, where a new chapter in local history is opening. The popular “Wild im West” flea market has to give up its location in the 3rd district due to the construction of the new “Wien-Holding-Arena”. But the initiative has already found a new location and is planning to move to Lügner City, which will be built on a former site belonging to the insolvent building materials dealer Quester. Here, the focus will be on handmade and used products on a spacious 6,000 square meters.

David Kreytenberg, managing director of “Wild im West”, is optimistic that the concept of the previously popular flea market businesses in Heiligenstadt will experience a new lease of life. The opening of “Lügner City” is planned for March 2026, and Kreytenberg is currently actively looking for retailers who would like to rent sales space. The concept, which moves away from plastic packaging and fast fashion, has the potential to become a popular destination for those who value sustainability.

Sustainability in focus

The “Lügner City”, which is organized by the Vienna initiative “Wild im West”, wants to be more than just a shopping center. In addition to sales areas, a large industrial kitchen and a community workshop are being planned. A key goal is to integrate the principles of sustainability into the DNA of the new project. The concept stipulates that the focus is on craftsmanship and creative projects, which sets the shopping center apart from others.

The name “Lügner City” was deliberately chosen and refers to the increasingly criticized greenwashing in the textile industry. However, David Kreytenberg promises that the final shopping center will have a different name with a more positive connotation. The initial interim use is planned for three years, with the hope of a long-term solution.

Regionally anchored and future-oriented

Despite the move, the “Wild im West” initiative remains active in Vienna. The new center will keep the old flea market tradition alive while adapting it in an innovative way. The project in Muthgasse not only serves as a simple marketplace, but also as a creative center that offers space for art, crafts and sustainable projects. A wide variety of tenants are being sought - from craftsmen and designers to hairdressers and massage providers.

The project in Heiligenstadt shows that urban development is not just about new buildings. Rather, the creation of lively social spaces plays a crucial role. This is where the vision of the famous city planner Victor Gruen comes to the fore, who once wanted to transform Vienna's city center into an environmental oasis. His ideas, such as promoting public spaces for festivals and events and establishing car-free zones, are more relevant today than ever and have a significant influence on projects such as “Lügner City”.

It will be exciting to see how the new Lügner City will fill the four walls of Muthgasse with life - a place that is not only intended for shopping, but also stands for encounters, exchange and sustainable creativity.
