Residents defend themselves against McDonald's pop-up: sleep is in danger because of the noise!
In Vienna, the residents of Barawitzkagasse 36 are facing an uncomfortable challenge: a planned pop-up McDonald's is causing concern and resentment in the neighborhood. Loud meinkreis.at Residents fear a significant increase in noise and an unwanted roadrunner scene, which has already established itself in the area on weekends in recent weeks. Many are reporting extreme noise pollution, and concerns are growing about further noise and odor nuisance from the temporary restaurant.
The pop-up restaurant will be set up during construction work on the existing McDonald's at Heiligenstädter Straße 68, which is scheduled to be rebuilt in 2026. The new location is planned as a drive-in car counter in a container design, but without a guest area or parking spaces. McDonald's emphasizes the benefits of jobs during the construction phase, but local residents are skeptical.
Resistance organized discomfort
Residents have already collected 170 signatures against the pop-up, expressing their displeasure. District boss Daniel Resch (ÖVP) said that approval for this location was not the district's responsibility, but compliance with the guidelines would still be monitored. Meanwhile, increased police controls on the Roadrunner scene were announced to reduce noise and bring more safety to the neighborhood.
Residents hope that those responsible will reconsider the location of the pop-up and find another location to maintain their quality of life. McDonald's promised to engage with residents, but the questions they raise cannot be dismissed: Is it really the right time and place for a new fast-food restaurant in this quiet corner?
How the situation develops and whether there will be any relent remains to be seen. The picture in Barawitzkagasse could soon change with the changes desired by many.
