Danger of traffic jams at the weekend: renovation work on the A 23!
Drivers in Vienna face challenges at the weekend. From today, November 7th, 2025, the A23 Südosttangente will be full. This busy road, which is used by around 220,000 vehicles every day, will be intensively worked on in the coming days. The section between the Prater junction and the Handelskai junction is currently in a renovation backlog, which is loud courier is worrying.
The work is primarily focused on the sections before and after Prater Hochstrasse, where renovations are in full swing. While the work on the Prater Hochstraße itself has already been completed, delays are to be expected over the weekends. From Friday evening, only one lane will be available on the section between the Kaisermühlen junction and the Prater junction towards Graz after 10 p.m. This measure will remain in effect until 9 a.m. the following day, which could cause frustration among passengers.
Traffic disruptions
During the day, drivers in the Handelskai area can drive in two lanes. However, from Saturday, November 7th, 10 p.m. to Monday, November 10th, 5 a.m., there will be a closure of the entrances and exits towards Graz. If the forecasts are correct, road users can expect quite long waiting times as the asphalt work takes some time.
The following applies to everyone traveling on the A23: If you get there early, you have the best chance of not getting stuck in traffic. The renovation measures are necessary to increase traffic safety and maintain the infrastructure in the long term. After the night closure on Monday morning, all lanes should be accessible again.
In the meantime, the appeal to all drivers remains: plan your journeys accordingly and use alternative routes if possible. It makes sense to find out about current traffic conditions to avoid unpleasant surprises.
