Leopoldstadt Dispute over new manure site: residents demand rethinking!

There are rumblings in Leopoldstadt: the discussion about the construction of a new “Grätzlmistplatz” on Innstrasse has heated up the minds of residents. The busy manure site on Dresdner Strasse has been closed for five years, prompting residents to look for solutions. A planned new location will now serve both as a disposal point and for sustainable offerings such as repair and upcycling workshops and swap meets. But not everyone agrees with this proposal. My district reports about the ongoing controversy.

Residents and committed citizens have started a petition against the location on Innstrasse. “A manure area is necessary, but it should fit the environment,” explains Hannes Unger, who leads the initiative. Criticism includes, among other things, the lack of public information about the project and the associated environmental pollution such as smells and noise. Residents fear the new facility could impact their quality of life.

Petition and public opinion

The petition, which is aimed at the Vienna City Council and the state parliament, has already gained some supporters. These demand a location-appropriate solution for the districts. There has been a lot of noise since the old manure dump on Dresdner Strasse was closed OpenPetition would like to return to this established location. In a 2022 survey, 83% of participants voted for the reopening of the old square, and only 16.7% were in favor of the new building option on Innstrasse.

The situation is further exacerbated by protests against the planned residential construction on adjacent areas. Residents and the citizens' initiative “Livable Nordbahnhof” have made it clear that they fear high levels of noise pollution and negative impacts on the recreational areas, which could be endangered by a manure dump in this central location.

Urban development and sustainable solutions

However, with its proposal to create a new manure area on Innstrasse, the city has formulated a concept from the SPÖ and Neos coalition. This could be in line with the goals of sustainable urban development, as they do Federal Environment Agency describes. The planning should therefore also take environmental and noise protection into account and minimize emissions.

District leader Christine Dubravac-Widholm supports the proposal and emphasizes the urgency of creating a suitable disposal site. “Planning has begun,” confirms the office of the Leopoldstadt district manager, although concrete details are still pending. The traffic concept, which is intended to ensure easy access for pedestrians and cargo bikes, is seen as part of the environmentally friendly strategy.

The future of the planned manure site on Innstrasse remains exciting. While some see it as a necessary relief for the surrounding area, others fear the negative consequences of such a location right on their doorstep. The debate about disposal cities and their optimal placement will continue - because there is something going on in Leopoldstadt.
