Cinema highlight: political thriller The Untouchables at WIFAR!
On January 29, 2026, the Vienna Film Archive of the Labor Movement (WIFAR) There are two exciting film screenings on the program. The event starts at 3 p.m. with the political thriller“The Untouchables”, in which Hollywood greats like Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman deal with one of the biggest political scandals in US history. The film deals with the Watergate affair, which resulted in the resignation of US President Richard Nixon. On June 17, 1972, employees of Nixon's re-election campaign were caught breaking into the Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington. This incident led to one of the most spectacular political scandals and significant reforms in American politics that reverberate to this day after Nixon resigned in 1974, becoming the first U.S. president to do so. The film won four Oscars for its gripping storytelling.
Afterwards, from 6 p.m., there will be the in-house production“On the beautiful red Danube”presented. This 44-minute film shows a different side of Vienna and brings viewers into the world of actors Rosa Heinz and Günther “Howdy” Schifter.
Culture and education in WIFAR
WIFAR was founded in 2001 to preserve historically valuable films and documents. It is a place that not only brings back nostalgic memories but also serves education. Film screenings take place here every month, which often have a social democratic connection and encourage reflection on history. The program offers a varied selection, from historical films to contemporary productions and independent film projects.
A special highlight is the “Cinema in Community Building” project, which follows the tradition of the workers’ education associations that have been active in Vienna since 1848. The goal of this program is to promote continuing education through lectures and film screenings and to make culture accessible to everyone.

Admission to the events at WIFAR is free, but the team welcomes voluntary donations. Due to limited places, registration is required by email wifar@aon.at recommended. Reservations expire 10 minutes before the show starts, so make sure you get there on time!
