Groundbreaking Edition of Pope Innocent III's Registers Launched!
In an exciting project by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the edition of the registers of Pope Innocence III, who ruled from 1198 to 1216, is being pushed forward. Initiated by Leo Santifaller in 1952, the historical documents are a valuable source for medieval research oeaw.ac.at reported. The original registers are kept in the Archivio Segreto Vaticano, with only a few copies existing from the 14th century. Until now, there were hardly any complete print editions, which made research difficult.
The edition, which is carried out in collaboration with the Historical Institute in Rome and the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna, offers access to the complete collection of papal letters. These documents reflect the Papate's political and religious interests and are a significant source of information. The publication is quick: after several years from 1993 to 2007, the complete edition including an analytical directory is planned for 2020. A digital version is also being planned.
Important details about the edition
The editorial team, led by Othmar Hageneder and Andrea Sommerlechner, also documents quotations from Roman and canon law as well as from theological sources in the edition. A comprehensive bibliographic index covering important people, places and events is also part of the project. Access to the texts is guaranteed through careful analysis and documentation.
