Austria Vienna fails in the Conference League qualification!

A hot evening in Vienna: SC Austria Wien had to play against Banik Ostrava in the second leg of the UEFA Conference League qualification on August 14, 2025. After an exciting first encounter, which ended with a narrow 3:4 for the Czech guests, the starting position for the second leg was clear. However, the Viennese's initial hope for a turnaround was quickly dashed.

10,022 spectators, including numerous Czech fans, gathered in the stadium to watch the action. The kick-off caused tempers to heat up, but Austria struggled to become dangerous offensively in the first half. Opportunities from Eggestein and Barry remained unused, which increasingly frustrated the fans. The disastrous goal was conceded in stoppage time in the first half: Prekop converted a penalty to make it 0-1 for Banik Ostrava after Guenouche Buchta fouled in the penalty area.

A glimmer of hope

The second round finally brought hope for the Viennese fans. In the 67th minute, Wiesinger equalized and for a moment a comeback seemed in sight. But despite the fresh influx of players from coach Stephan Helm, Austria could not maintain the pressure. The hoped-for second goal just wouldn't come, and in the end the score remained 1-1.

For Austria, this means elimination from international competition after a sobering performance. The team was forced to make changes due to injuries, such as Dragovic's, and illnesses, such as Handl's. Banik Ostrava, on the other hand, played with the same eleven as in the first leg and did not let themselves be disturbed.

A look at the next challenge

The Viennese's Europa League hopes have now been dashed for the time being. The focus must now quickly turn to the upcoming challenges in the domestic league. Coach Helm is required to motivate the team and find new tactics in order to be successful in the coming season.

Although the international competition remains a dream, the city and the fans are eagerly awaiting the next games in which Austria Vienna can show that they have the heart and passion to return to the top. This minor disappointment also offers opportunities for a new beginning, and Austria can manage to face the new challenges with fresh courage and commitment.
