Vienna Crisis Intervention Center: Modernization for new hope!

After being comprehensively modernized and expanded after almost 50 years, the Vienna Crisis Intervention Center recently reopened. This initiative aims to improve support in crisis situations and offer those affected flexible care in bright, inviting spaces. At the opening, City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker emphasized the historical significance of the center and its role as an anchor for people in emergency situations. A good offer, because the number of suicides in Austria remains alarming - 1,219 people died in 2024 who could possibly have been saved with timely help.

Founded in 1977, the Vienna Crisis Intervention Center has a long history in the field of psychosocial support. At a time when the pandemic was putting a lot of strain on the psychological well-being of many people, contacts with therapists rose to a total of 15,720 in 2024. This corresponds to an increase of almost 50% compared to the numbers before the corona pandemic. Around eight initial consultations are carried out every day by a dedicated team consisting of psychotherapists, clinical psychologists, social workers and doctors.

New options for those seeking help

The reopening also brings new services, such as the option of anonymous email advice, which makes it easier to access help. The crisis intervention center is available 24 hours a day, every day. Contact points are the telephone counseling service on 142 and the social psychiatric emergency service on 01/31 330. You can also reach the center itself on 01/406 95 95 from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The crisis intervention methodology is based on a proven multi-professional approach that combines medical, psychotherapeutic and social work expertise. A distinction is made between psychosocial crises and psychiatric emergencies. In the first cases there are suicidal thoughts or strong emotional stress, in the second cases immediate medical help is needed.

The path to support

The goal of crisis intervention is to build a trusting relationship and to provide appropriate support at short notice. This can last a few weeks or months and aims to quickly relieve stressful symptoms and avoid dangerous situations. Professionals use the BELLA system to ensure a structured approach: build rapport, understand the situation, alleviate symptoms, involve supporters and find an approach to problem solving.

The revision and expansion of the crisis intervention center sets a pioneering example for psychosocial facilities throughout Austria. Health Minister Korinna Schumann emphasized the social importance of the center, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and young people who are particularly in need of protection in crisis situations.

The Vienna Crisis Intervention Center has established itself as an important support in the city and shows that early interventions can have a lasting impact on the lives of many people. A commitment that is not only important for those affected, but also for society as a whole.
