Vienna in numbers: Alsergrund shines with a high quality of life and growth!

In the current edition of Statistical yearbook of the City of Vienna for 2024 impressively documents how the secret capital of Central Europe developed. With more than two million inhabitants since January 1, 2025, Vienna is showing continuous growth of 1.1 percent compared to the previous year. The city is doing well, especially in The Economist's quality of life ranking, where it comes in second place behind Copenhagen.

Viennese people can be happy: the gender distribution of 51 percent women (1,034,099) to 49 percent men (994,190) and an average age of 41.1 years reflect the colorful life in the city. 41,664 people currently live in Alsergrund, one of the most charming districts in Vienna, with the proportion of women here being slightly higher (52.5 percent) than the proportion of men (47.5 percent).

Population and quality of life in Alsergrund

The quality of life in Alsergrund can be described as high. With a population of 41,664, 43 new residents were recorded last year. With an impressive proportion of 53 percent academics, the district is not only attractive for those thirsty for knowledge, but also attracts numerous students: around 6,302 students make up 5 percent of all Vienna students.

With an average net income of 30,684 euros per year, the Alsergrund residents' income is above the Vienna average of 27,897 euros. The high quality of life is supported by a large number of parks - a total of 26 are available to residents, ideal for the around 900 dogs that are registered here. The dog density in Alsergrund is therefore 24 dogs per 1,000 inhabitants.

If we take a look at the economic structure, the healthcare sector emerges as the frontrunner. 23 percent of the district's more than 51,000 employees work in this area, followed by 21 percent in the education sector. This industry strength, coupled with moderate unemployment of 58 per 1,000 people of working age, well below the Vienna average of 103, promote a positive living environment.

Tourism and leisure

The development of tourism, which has recovered after the restrictions from 2020 to 2022, also plays a crucial role for the Alsergrund. In 2024, a total of 18,864,964 overnight stays were counted in Vienna, with the Alsergrund district having 15,453 overnight stays per 1,000 inhabitants. This means almost 600,000 overnight stays throughout the year, which is due to the district's high guest density.

The Vienna quality of life studies, which have been carried out regularly since 1995, also show that citizens rate Vienna very positively overall and that the city experiences great satisfaction with public offerings. The aim of urban planning is to ensure this high quality of life in the long term and to respond to the needs of the population. The studies provide a comprehensive picture of what is important to people in Vienna - from housing to leisure to health. With a view to the upcoming district council elections on April 27, 2025, it remains to be seen how the political landscape in Alsergrund will develop. The SPÖ and the Greens form a progressive majority in the district council. How the course will be set remains exciting!
