Vienna 2025: Election campaigns, renovations and new highlights in Alsergrund!
In 2025, Alsergrund has once again proven that it is a lively and dynamic district in Vienna. The upcoming elections and numerous local initiatives had a significant impact on the year and caused excitement and engagement among residents. Particularly important for the district was the postponement of the Vienna election and the district council elections to April 27, 2025, which resulted in increased attention and a shortened election campaign. According to the city's current surveys, the SPÖ under Mayor Michael Ludwig is still very popular and could prevail in the elections, even if the coalition with the NEOS may be on the rocks in this electoral period.
There are seven parties with different perspectives in the running in the upcoming elections: in addition to the SPÖ, the ÖVP, FPÖ, Greens, NEOS, KPÖ/Links and the HC Strache team. Experts predict that voter turnout could be low due to the short campaign and the early election. Whether the SPÖ can maintain its position remains exciting; the FPÖ has a good chance of second place, while the fight for third place will be decided between the ÖVP, the Greens and NEOS. The complete election results and analyzes can already be viewed on the City of Vienna website, where historical election data is also available. Wien.gv.at reports.
Local developments and cultural highlights
The Alsergrund has a lot to offer not only politically but also culturally. In April 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Julius-Tandler-Platz, which is in the final phase of work. The redesign of Wilhelm-Exner-Gasse is also nearing completion, which should further improve the quality of life in the district. The plan to make Frankhplatz greener is particularly encouraging, even though the subway connection will not become active until 2030. The residents at Hörlgasse 7, on the other hand, are fighting for improved living conditions - an issue that is making waves in the district.
The Alsergrund cultural scene continues to thrive. Two exhibitions in the feminist art space “Woman* Creates Space” are currently on view, and the Volksoper celebrated several premieres. As a center for creative events, the WUK (Vienna Environmental Center) also has a varied program up its sleeve. A newly opened attraction is the Christmas market in “Francis” in the Althan Quartier, which attracts numerous visitors.
Highlights and gastronomic innovations
Another notable event concerns the parrot shelter, which after many years at the old location of the Alte WU has to make way for the “Althangrund” campus. This has sparked conversations among residents who are concerned about the whereabouts of their animal residents. Science and animal protection are also topics that are very important in Alsergrund.
A lot is also happening on a gastronomic level. New restaurants such as the bar “BARbara” and the restaurant “Los Locos” have opened, while top chef Harald Brunner is withdrawing from the Servitenviertel. It remains exciting to see which of the new contact points will prevail. A lively district lives from its restaurants, and Alsergrund shows that it remains dynamic in the culinary sector.
The Alsergrund has its finger on the pulse not only politically, but also culturally and gastronomically. Will the SPÖ be able to defend its strong position? And what new trends will shape the district in the coming year? The coming months promise to be exciting! More information about the Vienna election and the parties can be found at Vienna.at.
