Water pipe laying in Alserbachstrasse: traffic violations from June!

Current construction sites are currently causing restrictions in Vienna's 9th district, especially in Alserbachstrasse. These measures began in February 2025 to ensure the long-term water supply in Vienna. From June 4, 2025, Alserbachstrasse will be closed towards the city center, while the direction out of town will remain accessible. This means that road users must expect diversions that lead via Liechtensteinstrasse and Viriotgasse to Nußdorfer Strasse. Residents can breathe a sigh of relief: the access to Pfluggasse remains accessible to emergency and construction vehicles, as vienna.at reports.

The construction work affects not only Alserbachstrasse itself, but also adjacent streets such as Nordbergstrasse and the area around the intersection with Julius-Tandler-Platz. The focus is on replacing the water pipes, which will be carried out in several construction phases. The renovation initiative is part of a larger project that has been running since 2021 and has seen around 160 kilometers of new lines laid to date. The completion of this phase of work on Alserbachstrasse is planned for October 2025, with further road construction work to follow by December 2025, according to 5min.at.

Adjustments to public transport

The changes on the roads also have an impact on public transport. The route of the 40A bus and the N38 night bus will be temporarily adjusted and some stops will be canceled during construction work. While the work on Alserbachstrasse will mainly be carried out at night in order to minimize disruption to residents, everyone who relies on public transport must expect temporary diversions.

The city of Vienna is striving not only to optimize the water supply, but also to improve the cycling infrastructure. Since April 2025, a structurally separate two-way cycle path has been set up to serve as a central connection between the Belt and the Lände on the Danube Canal. This new cycle path is also targeted for completion by October 2025 and is intended to provide cyclists with safe and convenient traffic, as wienerbezirksblatt.at explains.

In total, the city invests around 100 million euros annually in modernizing the water supply and thus in the quality of life of Viennese people. The third main line north, which is around 8.5 kilometers long and secures the water supply to many districts, is nearing completion, which promises further relief for the existing network.

Residents and commuters in Vienna can look forward to a more future-proof water supply and improved traffic conditions, even if these measures entail temporary restrictions.
