Desperate robbery: Seven perpetrators attack a young man in Vienna!

On Saturday, July 13, 2025, the police in Vienna-Alsergrund were called to a disturbing incident. A 25-year-old man suffered a bleeding head injury on the stairway between the Spittelau Bridge and the Friedensbrücke and reported an attack by a total of seven unknown people. He was walking when three perpetrators approached him and tried to rob him. The young man decided to take his chances and run away, but he wasn't fast enough.

A few hundred meters later he was stopped by four other accomplices. The situation escalated when one of the perpetrators drove a scooter towards him and rammed him, causing the man to fall to the ground. Lying on the ground, he was surrounded by all seven perpetrators and forced to hand over his cash. After the attack, the perpetrators fled in an unknown direction, while the 25-year-old received emergency medical care and was taken to a hospital. The investigation was carried out by Vienna State Criminal Police Office, Central branch, taken over.

A notable increase in robbery crimes

Despite such incidents, Vienna is considered one of the safest cities in Europe with almost 1.9 million inhabitants. But a worrying trend can be observed: in 2021, the number of robbery crimes rose to 1,780 cases, an increase of 29 compared to the previous year. The clearance rate for these serious offenses was 52.2% in 2021. The increase in robberies is having an impact on the security situation, particularly in shops and public areas.

To prevent this, business owners should take special precautions. Security guards recommend always observing the surroundings when entering or leaving business premises and designing cash registers so that monetary transactions cannot be seen by passers-by. Alarm systems and surveillance systems increase the risk for possible perpetrators. These measures are important not only for businesses, but also for all citizens to ensure a safe living space. Tips for what to do in the event of an attack include discreetly pressing an emergency button and contacting the police immediately if an incident occurs.  Police.gv.at provides helpful advice to increase resident safety.

How will the local community respond to this incident? It remains to be seen whether the State Criminal Police Office's investigations will quickly produce results and what measures will be taken to prevent attacks in the future.
