23 new climate projects: Vienna districts of Alsergrund, Meidling and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus in focus!
Today there is good news for the districts of Alsergrund, Meidling and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus! In the third round of the Vienna climate team, 23 fresh projects were presented that are to be implemented in the next few months. A total of 1,600 ideas were submitted, from which a jury selected the best and feasible suggestions. When the projects were presented on June 23rd, the focus was on taking the population's climate wishes into account and further increasing the quality of life in the districts. My district reports that the ideas for Alsergrund, Meidling and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus will be implemented in the coming months.
The distribution of ideas is promising: Alsergrund can look forward to seven projects, while Meidling and Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus can each implement eight. The range extends from the greening of the club stairs in Alsergrund to a swap shop with a repair café in Meidling to more shade on the Schmelz in the 15th district. These measures are financed from an annual budget of a maximum of 6 million euros, which amounts to 20 euros per resident - although it is hoped that further ideas will be implemented.
Citizen participation at all levels
The “Vienna Climate Team” project actively promotes citizen participation in climate protection. Viennese people are invited to contribute their ideas for improving the climate in their neighborhoods. Areas such as climate-friendly mobility, sustainable everyday life and energy-efficient urban space design can be addressed. The further phases of the project, such as the ongoing citizen jury, also aim to take the population's suggestions seriously. More information can be found on the website klimateam.wien.gv.at.
An important aspect of the project is taking into account the interests of all generations and cultures. This means that all idea contributors will receive feedback on their suggestions and can look forward to the results, which will be presented at the end of June. Since 2022, the pilot years in other districts such as Margareten and Ottakring have proven how many ideas citizens are bringing in.
Sustainable urban development for the future
With increasing urbanization in the 21st century, where over 50% of the world's population already lives in cities, sustainable urban development is becoming increasingly important. This is not just about climate-friendly measures, but also about social justice and the creation of livable environments. The Federal Agency for Civic Education highlights the need for a fair balance between current and future living conditions.
An example of this challenge could be air pollution from fossil fuels, which not only affects quality of life but also harms water supplies due to climate change. A good hand in urban development therefore also requires the active participation of all actors and sensitivity in dealing with the challenges of the time.
The next round of the Vienna climate team will start in autumn 2025 in the Josefstadt and Penzing districts. Here too, the city government will try to involve citizens more in the process and promote the exchange of ideas. Actively helping to shape living spaces is not only fun, but is also the key to a livable and sustainable city. Let’s make Vienna a bit more beautiful and sustainable together!
