Fire brigade operations in Austria
A survey shows that the fire brigade in Austria recorded around 34,000 more operations in 2023 than in the previous year - a total of 278,495 operations. Of these, an impressive 212,141 were technical operations, such as traffic accidents and severe weather events, while 66,354 were fire operations. This shows how important the fire department and its volunteer members are to our safety. Fire Department.at emphasizes that 99 percent of fire brigade members work on a voluntary basis and the proportion of women in the operational staff has now increased to 9.5 percent.
The need for a strong and solidarity-based fire service is undisputed, especially in view of the increasing number of severe weather events. Fire Department President Robert Mayer emphasizes that it is becoming increasingly important to strengthen the membership structure and promote technical innovations.
Commitment of the volunteer fire brigades
The topic of firefighting is also about community and team spirit. This was most recently made clear on October 25, 2025 at an impressive event in the St. Veit an der Glan district: the first district fire brigade performance march took place, in which 25 groups of all age groups took part. The route of around 45 kilometers led through picturesque towns and ended at Hochosterwitz Castle. There were numerous challenges that many participants mastered with flying colors. The fastest teams reached their destination around 2:00 p.m. and were welcomed by the St. Sebastian Volunteer Fire Department in the Khevenhüller family event hall. Bfk08 highlights the commitment of all the helpers who made this day possible.
Last but not least, respect goes to the property owners along the route and to the Austrian Red Cross for their support. Each team member was able to receive a commemorative pin, which particularly underlined the camaraderie.
