Shock accident in Carinthia: 12-year-old seriously injured in motorcycle collision!

On Friday afternoon there was a tragic motorcycle accident in Carinthia, which seriously injured a 12-year-old passenger and gave the motorcyclist landscape food for thought. A group of six people from the St. Veit an der Glan district went on a trip with three motorcycles and were on the B 317 around 4:45 p.m. when the last driver in the group, a 39-year-old man, collided with the motorcycle of a 32-year-old driver for unknown reasons. The collision occurred at kilometer 2,760 and resulted in the 39-year-old's motorcycle ending up in a ditch and being badly damaged.

Both the driver and his 12-year-old passenger fell in the accident. The boy suffered a serious injury to his left forearm and had to be flown to Klagenfurt Hospital in the Christophorus 17 emergency medical helicopter. Fortunately, the breath alcohol test for both drivers showed negative values of 0.0 mg/l. The B317 was temporarily closed until around 6:05 p.m. while traffic was alternately routed past the accident site, resulting in further traffic jams.

Unsafe road conditions and inattentive drivers

This collision is just one of many serious accidents that occurred across Austria on Friday and Saturday. On the same weekend, several motorcyclists had serious accidents, with two tragic accidents in Carinthia and Tyrol having fatal consequences. A 43-year-old man from Germany had an accident on the Metnitz state road and died at the scene of the accident, while a 77-year-old motorcyclist in Tyrol died from his injuries under similar circumstances. COURIER reports on further serious accidents in Upper Austria and other federal states that show the risks of riding a motorcycle.

According to an analysis by the VCÖ from last year, 80 percent of fatal motorcycle accidents occurred on open roads. The frightening figures show that not only speeding, but also driver distractions and inattentive behavior are the main causes of these serious accidents. VCOE therefore calls for increased attention to one's own safety and makes all road users aware of responsible driving.

Alarming statistics

In recent years, a total of 297 motorcyclists died in Austria between 2021 and 2024, with Upper Austria recording the most cases with 74 fatal accidents. The 50 to 64 year old age group is most affected. The VCÖ recommends paying particular attention to speed limits, avoiding risky overtaking maneuvers and always paying full attention in traffic.

Recent accidents highlight the dangers of riding a motorcycle, both for the riders themselves and for other road users. It is up to each individual to examine their own driving behavior and ensure that they exercise the necessary caution and vigilance when driving.

The events of the last few days are an urgent call to be more careful on the roads. Every accident has a story and we should learn from them to prevent future tragedies.
