Medea crime scene: Looking for clues after the child murder in Vienna!
On December 10, 2025, an extraordinary play will premiere in Vienna: “Tatort Medea”, a co-production with Theater am Werk and the Viennese collective God’s Entertainment. How TheaterCompass reports, the performance illuminates the complex figure of Medea and focuses on the tense question of child murder and the search for the truth. This is where things get spectacular: evidence is collected, witnesses are interviewed and possible suspects are narrowed down.
The focus of the piece is less on Medea herself, but rather on the investigators and their perspectives. This should shed some fresh light on ancient Greek tragedy. Medea, a daughter of Aeetes of Colchis, was not only a sorceress but also a priestess of Hecate. Their story, which is closely linked to the Golden Fleece and the famous Argonaut Jason, is told in different aspects. The complex emotions she experiences - from love to betrayal to extreme revenge - make her one of the most complex characters in Greek mythology. Theatrum summarizes these backgrounds and underlines the tragedy that Medea experiences throughout her story.
Addressing social and political issues
God’s Entertainment, active since 2006, has made a name for itself through performances, happenings and the communication of socio-political issues. Their production uses innovative forms of representation that go beyond the traditional theater stage. The combination of live acts, installation elements and interactive experiences ensures that the audience becomes not just a spectator, but part of the event.
This production plays with the manipulation and seduction of the audience in order to develop emotional depths. In the coming days, the collective will present “Tatort Medea” on December 10th, 11th and 12th at 8:15 p.m. and will enrich the Viennese theater landscape in an exciting way.
A controversial legacy
The story of Medea is riddled with violence and emotions that are explored in various Greek tragedies. The infanticide in Corinth, which Medea commits against her own children, is a central motif that many authors, including Euripides, have treated. In his play “Medeia,” written in 431 B.C. was performed, similar themes of jealousy, revenge and moral dilemmas can be found. Medea's actions - from the dismemberment of Pelias to the deaths of Glaukes and Creon - make the tragedy surrounding her character so compelling.
“Crime Scene Medea” promises to dress this historical context in a modern garb and show how the fight for truth and justice is also relevant in today’s society. So if you're open to exciting evenings at the theater, you shouldn't miss this premiere!
