Swimming accidents in Vienna: Danger to life on the water - fear for the victims!

A dramatic Sunday that turned into a nightmare for several swimmers in Vienna. Several men and a child were resuscitated in swimming accidents on the New Danube and in the Hirschstetten bathing pond. The Vienna fire brigade was called upon once again when water safety was seriously tested.

The emergency services' alarm went off around 4 p.m. when a 20-year-old man disappeared under the water near the “Neue Donau” subway station. Witnesses and bathers didn't hesitate for long and pulled the young man to the shore, where they immediately began the first life-saving measures. The fire department took over and ensured that the man received oxygen before he was flown to a hospital by rescue helicopter. Around two hours later, now near the Reichsbrücke, the scenario repeated itself. Another swimmer, around 50 years old, also had to be resuscitated after bathers pulled him out of the water. He was also transported by a rescue helicopter, as Puls24 reports.

A worrying trend

The current situation in Vienna is particularly alarming, where the number of swimming accidents remains at a worrying level, according to the Red Cross. Above all, careless jumps into the water, sudden changes in temperature and alcohol consumption are highlighted as risk factors. Experts warn urgently: “Never swim alone and never leave children unattended, even in shallow water,” according to the safety instructions recommended by both Kosmo and by the Maltese.

There was also a shocking incident in the Hirschstetten bathing pond when a child of primary school age had to be resuscitated after a swimming accident. Unfortunately, details about the child's condition are currently not available. It was also taken to a hospital by helicopter. These incidents make it clear how quickly dangerous situations can arise in the water.

Rescue measures and prevention

The experiences of these swimming accidents show how important it is to act correctly in dangerous situations. The Maltese make it clear that their own safety must always come first. That's why you should never just jump into the water to save a drowning person. Instead, it is advised to use fixed points on land to attempt a rescue from the safety of shore. Aids such as lifebuoys or air mattresses can make the difference and should be preferred in such situations. In swimming accidents, every second counts, and quick ventilation can be life-saving, as emphasized on Malteser.

It remains to be hoped that these incidents will raise awareness among the Viennese population and lead to more mindfulness when bathing. Because the water can become dangerous without warning. Protect yourself and your loved ones and enjoy swimming responsibly!
