Confusion at Aumannplatz: Ten traffic signs cause a stir!

At Aumannplatz in Vienna-Währing, an almost unbelievable collection of ten traffic signs within a very short distance causes a lot of attention and a smile. In this small “world of signs” there are, among other things, markings for a bike crossing. A picture of this situation caused amusement and incomprehension on Facebook, because how many traffic signs do you really need in one place? The district leader Silvia Nossek from the Greens has already spoken out and stated that she is in favor of reducing the number of signs. This high density of signals is classified as temporary, while redesign plans for the square are in the works, but no concrete details are yet available.

There are numerous schools and educational institutions near Aumannplatz, which makes the traffic situation particularly relevant. The tram stops directly on the opposite side of the square, a place that many students cross every day. Even if the new traffic routes, such as the two-way cycle path, which has been accessible from Gersthof to Aumannplatz since November, represent an improvement, the traffic chaos is visible in the morning. Not only cyclists are required here, little pedestrians also have to cross the street safely.

School route safety in focus

A current discussion among parents and teachers also revolves around the safety of routes to school. As the traffic watchdog states, it is difficult to imagine road traffic without clearly defined rules. Knowledge of traffic signs and compliance with rules makes it much easier to get along on the road. Children in particular need to learn the importance of these rules early on, as traffic mistakes can have fatal consequences. It is important for students to react appropriately to the situation and to expect mistakes made by other road users. Right of way only makes sense if it is not taken.

The methodology for raising students' awareness extends through practical exercises in which they are asked to identify traffic signs and understand their meaning. A walk around the school environment is often used to build real knowledge and awareness of the dangers on the road. Parents should also ensure that they bring their children to school safely. In order not to become part of the problem yourself, it is recommended that the child be dropped off a short distance from the school. Parents should also avoid stopping directly in front of schools, as dangerous crowds of “parent taxis” often form here, obstructing the view of pedestrians. Proper parking near schools could make a valuable contribution to safety.

In summary, it can be said that the traffic situation at Aumannplatz and general safety on the way to school show a great need for action. A participatory planning process, perhaps starting as early as late 2025 or early 2026, will provide clarity and hopefully significant improvement in the future. Until the actual redevelopment, which is not expected to start until 2027, the area will initially remain a curious example of the city's “sign thicket”.
