Car bet in Vienna wins VCÖ mobility award for sustainable mobility!

In Vienna, the car bet really hit home at this year's VCÖ Mobility Prize! The innovative project, which was launched in collaboration between Wiener Linien and the Währing district, impressed the jury in the “Sharing and multimodal mobility” category and thus won the prestigious prize. This exciting bet, which took place over a period of three months, featured 46 participants who dared to go without their own car.

What's behind this bet? The participants received 500 euros per month to switch completely to public transport. The response was impressive: two thirds of the participants could easily imagine life without a private car. “Making alternative forms of mobility visible was a decisive reason for our award,” said the competition jury. In her praise, Wiener Linien managing director Alexandra Reinagl emphasized the valuable contribution to climate protection of every journey that is not made in your own car.

A competent team and exciting results

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Boku) is providing scientific support for the project. A full final report with the collected results is expected to be published at the end of the year. District leader Silvia Nossek, who is enthusiastically following the green project, is confident that there is still a lot of potential for alternative mobility solutions in Vienna.

The VCÖ Mobility Prize is not only a local highlight, but also Austria's largest competition for sustainable mobility and climate-friendly freight transport. In 2023, a total of 363 projects and concepts were put to the test when the motto “Future fit for the city and country” dominated events. The expert jury evaluated the submissions and awarded the top projects that were able to collect additional points through online voting. The Styrian Transport Association was named overall winner this year.

Diverse approaches for environmentally friendly mobility

The importance of well-coordinated mobility should not be underestimated. The CEO of ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG, Klaus Garstenauer, emphasizes the breadth and future-oriented nature of the award-winning projects. The VCÖ Mobility Prize 2025 is already looking for exemplary projects for environmentally friendly mobility. Initiatives that make it easier to access climate-friendly mobility are more popular than ever, including the OÖVV's new apps to improve public transport in Upper Austria.

The numerous ideas and innovations represent the change towards environmentally friendly transport solutions. There is definitely something going on when it comes to the future of our mobility!
