Young people attack a man in Leopoldstadt: shot fired!
A nighttime attack caused a stir in Leopoldstadt: four young people attacked a 43-year-old man in Leopoldine-Schlinger-Gasse on Sunday morning. According to Kurier this happened around 4:30 a.m. when the perpetrators asked the man for a light and suddenly hit him in the head with a handgun. But that wasn't enough: the accomplices also attacked him, while a shot was fired during the attack - probably from a blank gun. Fortunately, no traces of a real weapon could be found.
The victim was robbed with a fanny pack containing a low three-digit amount of money, keys and an ATM card. After the attack, the man received emergency medical care and was taken to hospital. It is interesting that the 43-year-old has not yet been questioned, but he expressed the suspicion that the young people were of Arab origin. The search for the perpetrators has so far had no success, which is why the investigation has now been taken over by the State Criminal Police Office. Growing juvenile crime
Unfortunately, this incident joins a worrying trend. There has been a significant increase in juvenile crime in Vienna. According to heute, the total number of advertisements increased by 4.6% to 194,981 in 2024. The increase in robbery crimes is particularly alarming, increasing by 18.1% to 1,394 cases. More than half of the perpetrators (57.1%) come from abroad and the number of under-18s reported increased by 33%.
The trends also show that younger and younger offenders are active, with the oldest at just 10 years old. The 10 to 14 year old age group showed an increase from 3,186 to 5,066. These developments have resulted in the creation of an interdisciplinary working group on “Child and Youth Crime”, which was set up in 2024 to preventively counteract the problem.
The local neighborhood in focus
In the midst of such incidents, the local community is called upon to stand together. While the issue surrounding the attack is heating up people's minds, there is also positive news from the districts. Local companies like the Közde Döner Restaurant, which is known for its traditional kebabs, organize competitions and vouchers for residents in order to strengthen the sense of community and balance in one create a polluted environment.
The precarious situation calls for a collective effort in the neighborhood to maintain citizens' sense of security and seriously address the causes of juvenile crime.
