Greener Simmeringer Hauptstrasse: Expansion for a better quality of life begins!
Simmeringer Hauptstrasse, a central part of the district of the same name, is about to undergo an exciting transformation that is scheduled to begin in spring 2026. The aim of this initiative is not only to increase the attractiveness of the district, but also to significantly improve the microclimate. This is part of the city's “Get Out of the Asphalt” campaign, which is dedicated to greening and unsealing areas. That reports Vienna.at.
The desire for more green space is important to residents. In a survey, 84% of the 1,167 participants said that additional greenery was important to them. This is also reflected in the desired innovations: Plantations, like those planted on Litfaßstrasse in autumn 2024, are intended to improve the pedestrian zones. Numerous new seating and water features are also on the wish list. However, only 25% of respondents expressed a strong interest in preserving car parking spaces, showing that priorities are shifting away from car traffic towards a better quality of life. This delivers these results Vienna district newspaper.
Planned measures and infrastructure
The renovation extends over an approximately 700 meter long section between Litfaßstrasse and Zippererstrasse. In addition to planting 52 new trees, an area of 5,500 m² of asphalt will be unsealed to make room for 3,500 m² of new green beds. Residents should be able to stroll in a friendlier environment in the future, as the sidewalks will also be made wider and the crossings will be safer and barrier-free for pedestrians. The planned renovations will not only make the public space more aesthetic, but also more functional.
The project is in the context of global developments in which urban spaces are becoming increasingly important. United Nations forecasts show that by 2030, over 60% of the world's population will live in cities. With this redesign, Vienna not only wants to counteract the densification of cities, but also make an active contribution to improving the quality of life. Well-structured greenery can also have positive effects in terms of oxygen production, CO2 binding and as a filter against fine dust, such as Fraunhofer Society clarified.
Transparent planning and citizen participation
An information exhibition took place on October 1, 2025 in the district council's ballroom on Enkplatz to offer citizens the opportunity to exchange information. Further events to present the designs are already planned for July 3, 2025. The city of Vienna and the district council consistently emphasize how important dialogue with residents is. The project should not only stand for a “liveable climate model city of Vienna”, but also give residents the feeling of being heard and actively participating in the design of their surroundings.
How the plans develop further and what specific changes will make Simmeringer Hauptstrasse more attractive as soon as possible remains exciting!
