Successful renovation of the Molitorgasse elementary school: future-oriented and barrier-free!
After 18 months of intensive construction work, the modernization of the Molitorgasse 11 elementary school in Simmering has now been successfully completed. This comprehensive renovation, which involves an investment volume of almost 14 million euros, was ceremoniously inaugurated on December 4, 2025 and aims to align the school with current educational and spatial requirements. According to information from W24 Numerous measures have been implemented to sustainably modernize the educational and community sectors.
As part of the renovation, all educational rooms and common areas were renewed. A new exercise room and a central cloakroom were built, and an additional lift ensures barrier-free access to the building. Furthermore, the school structure was changed to all-day care, which significantly improved the conditions for students. In addition, a spacious dining room with a warm-up kitchen was created and the inner courtyard was redesigned. As part of this redesign, the students even chose the new play equipment themselves, which further strengthens their identification with the school.
A step into the future of education
The modernization is taking place as part of the school renovation package II, which has been covering up to 80% of the costs for the renovation of compulsory public schools since 2018. Representatives of the city of Vienna emphasize the importance of these projects for education, accessibility and equal opportunities in the city. The Molitorgasse elementary school is therefore not only an example of necessary maintenance measures, but also a model for future school construction projects that implement contemporary and future-oriented standards.
Particular attention was also paid to sustainability. The successful renovation has received the renowned Klimaaktiv certification, which underlines the investments in ecological and climate-friendly measures. The implementation measures include, among other things, the installation of a photovoltaic system, a mechanical ventilation system and a green facade, which is intended to help improve the indoor climate. In this way, the school is supporting the Austria-wide initiative to position schools as pioneers in sustainability, as in bmb.gv.at is to be read.
A total of 36 school construction projects are currently being implemented and 42 are being planned throughout Austria, with these measures not only aiming to renew the schools but also to optimize them in terms of energy technology. The aim is to significantly reduce energy consumption and bring schools to a high environmentally friendly standard, while at the same time providing modern educational opportunities for the next generations.
The reopening of Molitorgasse 11 sends a signal to the city of Vienna that investment in education and infrastructure is essential to meet the needs of students. The concept of all-day care and the consideration of environmental aspects make this elementary school a showcase among Viennese schools and show that a good hand for the future organization of everyday school life has been demonstrated here.
