Shock in Vienna: 16-year-old injured in school attack – perpetrator on the run!

On Tuesday morning, an incident in a high school in Vienna-Brigittenau caused excitement and concern. A 16-year-old was stabbed several times in the school toilet. Fortunately, her life is out of danger and she was immediately taken to a hospital where she is being treated. However, according to initial reports, the injuries to the upper body are superficial.

The drama began around 10:00 a.m. when the terrible act occurred. Shortly after the incident, the school was searched by police, with the search ending after approximately two hours and yielding negative results. The officers seized two knives in the area around the school: one in the school building, in the immediate vicinity of the injured student, and another in front of the building. However, it remains unclear whether one of these knives served as the murder weapon. There is currently no suspect arrested, which is worrying some parents who say they were inadequately informed about what was happening. A parent letter was sent in the afternoon to provide information. The spokeswoman for the Education Directorate emphasized that information is provided quickly in coordination with the police, but this can take time.

Investigations underway

The increase in knife attacks among young people is particularly worrying. Imagine: On March 6, 2025, another incident occurred in front of a middle school in Vienna-Favoriten when a 15-year-old was injured in the thigh with a knife. The suspected perpetrator, a 16-year-old Syrian, initially fled the crime scene, but was arrested by the police in his apartment a short time later. Such incidents are not isolated; According to recent reports, knife violence among young people is increasing worldwide.

A recent analysis shows that police in many cities, including Vienna, are increasingly confronted with the problem of youth crime. A study illustrates that around 3,500 knife attacks were recorded in Germany in 2023, an alarming increase of 43 percent compared to the previous year. The perpetrators are predominantly male, and a large proportion of the accused are under 21 years old. This raises questions about preventive measures that schools and authorities take to increase feelings of security.

Schools in focus

In Vienna, the discussion about security concepts in schools is now getting louder. It becomes clear that schools are not only educational institutions, but also places where combating violence and prevention must play a central role. The need to train democratic behavior and teach how to deal with conflict is undisputed. The increase in juvenile crime, especially after the corona pandemic, is making many parents and teachers sit up and take notice.

Given current events, it is crucial that schools take proactive steps to ensure such incidents do not become the norm. A good hand in communication between school, parents and police could be essential here.
