Viennese Grätzl projects: Citizens actively shape their neighborhood!

At a time when urban living spaces are becoming increasingly scarce, the city of Vienna is setting an example of citizen participation and creativity. With the start of the “Grätzllabor” funding program in April 2025, the Viennese population now has the opportunity to actively work on improving their living environment. A total of 25 projects were decided in twelve districts, offering numerous design options.

The main goal of this initiative is to help shape the Grätzl through the people who live there. Projects range from small improvements like seating and drinking fountains to more innovative ideas. A concrete example is the conversion of a hydrant in Penzing, which facilitates access to water for greening a parklet. District leader Michaela Schüchner emphasizes the importance of citizen participation: “Everyone is invited to contribute ideas for their district and to actively work on implementation,” she explains.(Courier)

Variety of projects and support from the city

The new Grätzllabore offer a variety of projects, including green pavilions and even worm hotels. These are not only intended to beautify, but also to have a positive impact on the environment. In 2025, 150,000 euros and in 2026 even 240,000 euros will be available for the implementation of the projects. The focus is on the quick and uncomplicated implementation of good ideas from the neighborhood, which are implemented together by citizens, administration and district politics.(Vienna Press)

The main topics of the Grätzllabore are as diverse as the city itself: public space design, mobility, climate adaptation, urban gardening and the circular economy are in the foreground. Citizens can contribute their ideas at any time and receive free on-site support. This creates an active community that not only strengthens the neighborhood but also promotes social cohesion.

Community gardens as a solution to urban challenges

Increasing urbanization also poses challenges for Vienna. Sealing of land, loss of biodiversity and social isolation are just some of the problems that have increased in recent years. Urban gardening offers innovative solutions that contribute to improving the quality of life in cities.(Greenthumb Path)

Community gardens promote togetherness and create new local networks. They not only serve as meeting places, but also help to raise awareness of ecological issues. Promoting social cohesion through gardening together plays a central role. Such projects could also be excellent examples of the further development of urban spaces in Vienna.

The Grätzllabore and the associated initiatives are not only a step in the right direction to make the city more livable, but also an important contribution to creating a sustainable and integrative urban living space. The Viennese are invited to contribute their ideas and actively participate in the design of their surroundings.
