Climate team starts in Josefstadt and Penzing – your ideas are needed!

Climate protection is now also very important in the Vienna districts of Josefstadt and Penzing. A new climate team has just been launched, giving residents the opportunity to actively participate in creating a more climate-friendly living space. On September 10th there was a presentation in Grete-Rehor-Park, at which district leaders Martin Fabisch from the Greens and Michaela Schüchner from the SPÖ as well as city councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky from the SPÖ presented the initiative. In their joint appeal, they addressed the population directly and invited all Viennese to submit their ideas by October 10th - whether by postcard or online at klimateam.wien.gv.at.

“We need your input, because the best ideas often come directly from the neighborhood,” Fabisch emphasized the importance of direct exchange with residents. The climate team is supported by prominent ambassadors such as singer Julian Le Play, Biero landlady Leni Swoboda and Veronika Pawel from “City of Ubuntu”. Manfred Haring from “Kiddy&Co” was also involved in supporting children and young people in finding ideas in Penzing.

Invitation to brainstorm ideas

In this innovation process, district residents are invited to express their suggestions on topics such as renewable energies, circular economy, climate-friendly mobility and a climate-fit urban space. At least 500,000 euros are available for Josefstadt, which corresponds to around 20 euros per resident.

Citizens and municipalities are crucial to the success of the energy transition, emphasizes the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry. The commitment of local people is seen as the key to the implementation of climate-friendly projects. “The direct line to the residents is essential for us,” adds Schüchner.

Action weeks and forums

In order to motivate even more people to get involved, various action weeks are planned in Josefstadt and Penzing. These not only include events, but also the opportunity to exchange ideas directly with city councilors and experts. The first Vienna climate team forums will take place on October 1st in the ballroom of the district council in Hütteldorf and on October 8th in the meeting room in Josefstadt. Those responsible here want to answer all of the citizens' questions and initiate fruitful discussions.

To ensure that the best ideas can actually be implemented, a group of experts from the City of Vienna examines the suggestions for their feasibility. From summer 2026, a representative jury of citizens will decide on the submitted projects before implementation begins in spring 2026. “We are excited about the variety of ideas that reflect the realities of life in our districts,” says Schüchner.

Take advantage of the opportunity and submit your ideas by October 10th! Let's make a contribution to a better climate together!
