Inclusion derby in Vienna: Rapid and Austria show team spirit!

The sensational derby between Rapid and Austria in Hütteldorf not only ignited footballing passion, but also sent a strong signal for inclusion. On June 18, 2025, the spectacle took place in front of sold-out crowds, and as is so often the case, the result was actually secondary. Michael Wondre, who has been playing for Rapid's Special Needs Team since 2014, played a central role in this context and became a role model for many.

Before we move on to the touching moments of the game, it is important to emphasize the relevance of the event. Former Rapid goalkeeper Helge Payer had to abandon the match due to health problems, which further heated up the atmosphere in the stadium. There was no doubt that the evening was unforgettable for everyone involved.

Unique inclusion derby

The game also marked the start of the 3rd Vienna inclusion derby, which took place on June 17, 2025 in the Allianz Stadium. Players from SK Rapid and FK Austria Wien competed against each other under the motto “Together instead of against each other”. The special thing about it: Admission was free for all spectators, so that a broad audience was addressed. The proceeds benefit the Special Needs Teams and the Special Olympics Austria.

The inclusion derby sent a strong message and united players from special needs teams, women's and girls' teams as well as club legends. Referee Sara Telek ensured everything went smoothly. The President of SK Rapid, Alexander Wrabetz, and Dr. Kurt Gollowitzer from FK Austria Vienna were both pleased with the support and positive response this initiative generated.

An evening for everyone

The fun and enjoyment of the game was the focus of this special event. Kick-off took place at 5:00 p.m. after the Allianz Stand opened at 4:00 p.m. Compared to other derbies and recent encounters, which did not always attract the desired level of spectator interest, the crowds at this event were pleasingly large. Against the backdrop of a possible attendance record in the league, every fan was a valuable part of the evening.

With a focus on inclusion and community spirit, the derby showed that sport can bring people together, regardless of the differences that may divide them. The initiators, including Coca-Cola, are confirming their long-term commitment to inclusion, which has existed since 1968.

In the spirit of Wondre's commitment and the message of the second derby of this kind, one thing is clear: It's not just the points that count, but the mutual support and solidarity that make real sport something special.
