Anger as a drive: Ottakringer actively shape your neighborhood!

Yppenplatz, 1160 Wien, Österreich - The district of Ottakring shows how sensible commitment can arise from frustration. According to the editor Lukas Ipirotis, the Ottakringer should not only swallow their trouble in silence, but also actively stand up for changes. The anger over everyday nuisance, be it an unfavorable furniture arrangement or the missing remote control, can become a valuable drive when it comes to things that really affect the community. An example of this is the controversial change of Ottakringer Straße, especially the introduction of the “BikeBox”, which has triggered great discussions and offers the potential for positive changes in the neighborhood. Every opinion counts to promote dialogue and bring about real improvements. Readers are invited to share their concerns at ottaking@meinbezirk.at.

With initiatives such as the BikeBox, it becomes clear that active citizen participation is necessary to increase the quality of life in the district. This can also be found in the newly created Grätlbox Am Yppenplatz. Here the space should become a safe and attractive place for everyone.

The GrätzlBox as a communication hub

The Grätzlbox serves as the heart of the Yppenplatz and offers numerous options for interaction. Regardless of whether it is art and culture or social advice - the box has something to offer for everyone. Daily program items such as grown -up spaces, children's programs and police consultation hours stimulate the exchange among the residents and strengthen the neighborly coexistence.

But how does it come that the GrätzlBox was launched? The idea is the result of joint efforts between the district, the city of Vienna and local initiatives. The creative head behind this project, the artist Andreas Strauss, has developed a concept in cooperation with the traditional company Bruckmüller that acts as a communication hub. During one of the first grown talks, the name "Grätzlbox" was then set. This underlines the importance of residents' participation, which is used in Ottakring and beyond the borders as an inspiring example of other districts, such as Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.

model for the future

commitment, as practiced in Ottakring, also shapes urban development in other cities. In Berlin, for example, the focus is on similar goals. There is an attempt to further facilitate citizen participation and to promote cooperative urban development. Such concepts show how important it is to involve the residents in the process and open up scope for maneuver - an insight that also bears good fruits in Ottakring. It only takes a pinch of passionate frustration to move something and thus do something good for the community, every voice is required.

Finally, it should be pointed out to a competition that runs until June 6 and supports animal initiatives. This shows that Ottakring is not only concerned with everyday concerns, but also about the holistic and positive changes in society.
