Vienna's town hall cellar shines in new splendor after 100 days of renovation!

The Vienna Rathauskeller has reopened its doors after a thorough renovation. On September 1, 2025, the popular venue, which has been a fixture in Vienna's dining scene since it opened in 1899, was ceremoniously reopened after 100 working days of extensive renovation work. This was done in two construction phases, most of which were carried out during ongoing operations. More than two thirds of the work was not even noticeable for the guests, meaning that the flair of the traditional restaurant was retained. Gastro.news reports that the entire entrance area as well as the connecting corridors to the event rooms, offices and historical halls such as the Grinzinger Keller, the Rittersaal and the Ziehrer Salon were renovated.

Particularly noteworthy is the successful balance between preserving the historical charm and modern accents. Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig, one of the first visitors after the reopening, praised the extensive renovation and the preservation of the original atmosphere. Today.at informs us that in addition to the Grinzinger Cellar, which was equipped with new chandeliers made based on models that are over 125 years old, the Lanner/Lehár Hall was upgraded with modern event technology. The Augustin Stüberl also shines in new splendor with refreshed wooden furniture and targeted lighting.

Tradition meets modernity

The renovation was a matter of the heart for those responsible at GMS GOURMET GmbH, especially managing director Herbert Fuchs. He emphasized that it was important to preserve the traditional elements while at the same time providing fresh ideas. Around 870 new chairs with the city's coat of arms were purchased and historical images were cleaned in over 1,680 hours of work. In addition, 600 m² of flooring was removed and re-laid and 4,750 m² of wall and ceiling surfaces were painted. Gastro.news also highlights that sustainability played a role in the renovation, which is reflected in the installation of LED lights with motion detectors and a new, barrier-free stair lift.

The Vienna Rathauskeller remains a popular meeting place for celebrations and events of all kinds. In terms of cuisine, it spoils its guests with traditional Viennese cuisine and regional ingredients, complemented by a regularly changing menu. Special formats such as crime dinners, comedy dinners and dinner musicals with ABBA hits are also on the program, which makes the venue particularly attractive.

A new age

With the renovation, the Vienna Rathauskeller is not only freshly spruced up, but also perfectly prepared for future challenges in the event sector. The successful balancing act between historical substance and modern ambience should ensure that the town hall cellar will continue to be very popular. Visitors are invited to experience the symbiotic connection of history, architecture and cuisine in this unique ambience.
