New sports center in Meidling: women's football on the rise!

The football fans in Meidling can rejoice: After months of renovation work, the newly designed sports center in Hervicusgasse was ceremoniously presented. This facility is not only home to the Sportunion Schönbrunn, which focuses on women's football, but also to the USZ Hetzendorf. The tradition of the sports field is deeply rooted in the region, and now it shines in new splendor.

The renovation of the field, which has served as a sports facility for many years, was necessary because according to ÖFB rules it was around four meters too small. Work began in September 2024 and was completed in March 2025. The project was co-financed by the City of Vienna, which shows how important it is to promote sport in the capital. The focus here was particularly on the core of the renovation: a new large artificial turf field in league dimensions (90 x 60 meters). This investment not only increases the quality of play, but also reduces heat stress by filling with cork.

Modernization and security

Another essential part of the renovation was the construction of a new retaining wall and the repositioning of an escape route, which improved the safety of the athletes. In addition, the floodlights were converted to LED to ensure ideal visibility - a real benefit for the many games that will take place here.

Dagmar Schmidt, President of the Sportunion Vienna, emphasized the growing importance of women's football in her speech. Women's and girls' teams in particular are attracting more and more families. The Sportunion Schönbrunn is therefore pleased about the women's team's upcoming chances of promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. The “Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered!” project also offers weekly sports sessions over nine weeks in which fathers and daughters can be active together.

Current situation of the Sportunion Schönbrunn

Although the positive sporting developments in Meidling give us a lot to be happy about, there are also some challenges for the Schönbrunn Sport Union. There have been no new additions since the start of the current season, so it is time to strengthen the teams.
