Meidling is blossoming: New ideas for Christine Busta Park!

The Christine Busta Park in Meidling is about to undergo a comprehensive redesign. After 20 years of intensive use, the 6,000 square meter area is being brought into shape to meet the needs of residents and park visitors. Around 300 citizens have already submitted their ideas and suggestions, which were collected through on-site discussions, a hands-on day and digital channels. The urban renewal area management compiled the suggestions and forwarded them to the city's planning departments. The first preliminary draft, which was presented in the park, met with broad approval among those present. District leader Wilfried Zankl emphasized the importance of this citizen participation.

Some of the park users' wishes are particularly in focus: the existing playground and ball playing areas should be retained, while at the same time more play equipment is needed for different age groups. Residents are also demanding additional climbing elements, a table tennis table, a basketball area and even a calisthenics facility. The existing paved paths, which are ideal for scootering, running and playing, should also not only be preserved, but also further expanded. The long-standing trees should also be protected in order to offer residents shady places to relax. For this purpose, additional shaded areas in play and sports zones as well as new seating, such as bench-table combinations and hammocks, are planned. Water feature elements and a drinking fountain make the concept attractive. A toilet facility that is open all year round is seen as a necessary element.

Planned timeline and expectations

The design for the new park will be finalized in the coming months. The final phase of the renovation plan is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, while construction on the new park is scheduled to begin in fall 2026. The modernized park is expected to open in spring 2027. The redevelopment of this urban green space is part of a larger trend aimed at improving the urban climate and increasing the quality of life.

As has already been observed in other cities around the world, the focus on urban green spaces is becoming increasingly important. Initiatives to develop and maintain parks ensure that such open spaces function not only as places for recreation, but also as important components of sustainable urban development. This can be seen, for example, in increasing quality of life, improving health and reducing noise and dust. Urban greenery has the potential to have a positive impact on property values and serve as a habitat for flora and fauna, as demonstrated by numerous case studies over the last decade. The networking of existing green spaces is particularly important in order to promote the multifunctional use of urban space. These strategies are supported, among other things, by the project of the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, Construction, Housing and Transport, which aims to create green open spaces in urban development in order to increase the quality of life of the population.

The redesign of Christine Busta Park could not only become a place for relaxation and play, but also an example of the positive development of urban spaces in the heart of Vienna.
