World record attempt in Herrenberg: Largest living wind turbine is created!
An exciting event is coming up: Next Sunday, June 29, 2025, the world record attempt for the largest living wind turbine in the world will take place in Herrenberg. Organized by the citizens' initiative Rückwind Herrenberg in collaboration with several wind power initiatives, it will be a festival to promote renewable energies and regional energy production. The planned dimensions for the living wind turbine are impressive - with a rotor diameter of 30 meters and a maximum height of 40 meters, the record attempt will provide a significant backdrop.
Austria currently holds the record with 260 participants, set in Vienna in 2017. But the organizers in Herrenberg are optimistic: Over 300 people are expected to simulate a wind turbine together by running synchronously. “Energy in citizens’ hands” is the motto of the event, which aims to send a clear signal for wind power as a clean and cheap energy of the future, reports Gäubote.
Diverse festival program
The event promises much more than just the record attempt. An informative cultural program begins at 1 p.m., at which the first speaker, Environment Minister Thekla Walker, will take the floor. Other speakers include representatives of the Ingersheim citizens' initiative and the humanitarian aid organization "Drei Musketeers Reutlingen e.V.". There will also be musical contributions from young people from the Herrenberger Percussion Ensemble and other artists.
If you're feeling a little hungry in between, stalls will offer a colorful selection of food, including pizza, crepes, Turkish specialties and refreshing ice cream. A family program with craft activities for children will also be included to make the event attractive for all age groups.
On the Road – Getting to the festival meadow
The organizers offer several options for getting there: A bike tour takes you from over ten starting points to Herrenberg. Train travelers only have to plan a 15-minute walk from the train station to the festival meadow, and drivers can find free parking spaces opposite the festival meadow. This means that anyone who wants to can actively take part in the world record attempt.
Citizen participation plays a central role in this context, especially as the requirements for renewable energies and their acceptance are increasingly coming into focus. It turns out that the topic of citizen participation in wind and solar projects is in high demand. Initiators such as Eueco have already published several guidelines that help local decision-makers and project developers to successfully implement citizen participation Renewable energy reported. The event in Herrenberg will not only be a highlight for the local participants, but could also serve as a model for similar projects in the future.
Anyone who doesn't just want to experience the record attempt as a spectator, but would like to actively participate, can contact us at info@rueckenwind-herrenberg.de. The team is motivated to involve citizens in the energy transition and shows that the commitment to renewable energies is also strongly anchored regionally.
